So the manual pump is in the oil resivoir side and the main pump in the front hole pto side. There’s two types of manual pumps. The earlier ones had the 4mm bb and spring, the later ones it was eliminated. I’m fairly certain that the spring slides into the case and the bb sits against the semi circular indent into the lower port on the pump. I usually use a dab of grease to hold the bb onto the pump to reinstall it. As you mentioned there are two orings as well on the back of the manual pump. I’ll try to post a pic when I get home later. I’ve had problems (lots) with these manual pumps and have had to re-spilt several cases after a build was done to get these buggers working. I like to check operation before I get to far.

Thanks for the info, and damn it, I installed it in the upper port, it looks like I will have to split the case again.

ok, I am waiting for a new piston and oiler plunger knob to arrive in the mail so I got time...I bought the 075 and 056 magnum II for Christmas, the 056 runs great the 075 needed a complete rebuild.

Both excellent saws! Love the Mag for felling. Probably the most loved saw in the Pacific Northwest. So you got it right, top hole for spring and bb with bb on pump side. Pic shows the 2 styles. Second pic shows the case minus the two orings. Maybe the 3/8 oring you found slid off the plunger barrel?

Was searching for the source of metal that caused the failure and just discovered the wonky crank bearing.

Found the three small pieces in the spark plug and the fished the large one out of the crank bearing.
I assume that large piece is part of the crank bearing cage. I have never seen one apart. Is that what it is?

Is there a particular gasket material that is preferred for the cases? Seems the aftermarket are made from a different material than OE.

That is true. I’ve used both and never had a problem with either. I think the important thing is a clean surface, proper torque of case screws and I like the permatex anaerobic gasket sealer.

Interesting. I was contemplating using permatex 80019 aviation sealant. I googed Permatex anaerobic and there are two types. Flange sealant 51531 and gasket maker 51813. Which do you use?

I use the 51813. I like to use a lot so if I get some blobs inside the case it’s no big deal. The gas eats it away and it cleans up when you run it. If you re split the case you’ll see how well the gasket sealed as it gets destroyed upon splitting. It sticks very well.

As far as the seals go, I like the double lip spring pressure seals. The cheap Chinese ones may work but why risk it. The green Stihl ones that are nos may be to old and hard.

Just finished reading this thread after buying an 076av super from sawfun. Decided to convert it to 3/8 with an Oregon kit. Thanks to Pogo and his oil pump adventures I know what those pins I cut off were for. Anyway the reason I'm posting is I think I've come up with a pretty good clutch removal tool. As you can see in the pictures I cut off every other flat on a 1" socket. I had to open up the inside to clear the central hub of the clutch so I think a 1 1/16 socket would do a better job but this seeems to be really quick and easy way to make a cheap tool that can satisfy both the hand torque and impact gun camps on these tools.

I have a very early 051AVE that has developed ignition issues. Can I replace the coil/trigger (1111 400 1305/1114 400 1000) with the newer stihl ignition module (1111 400 1303)?

Pretty sure the 1303 will simply replace the 1305 and also eliminate the trigger module. I seem to recall the subject being covered some pages ago. And someone else will need to chime in regarding whether or not it is a limited module, but it is also used on the TS510 and TS760 cutoff saws so may well be limited as a result of that application alone.

This module is not limited. (TI 33.1995) TS 510, 760

Correct. And a bit more reading in my TS510/760 service manual shows the module itself is unlimited but the TS510 or TS760 with ignition armatures employ an external switching device to limit RPM's relative to spindle size...., presumably as a safety feature.

I have acquired a Stihl 051 AV and it needs a new flywheel. The part number on the one I’ve taken off doesn’t match the number it’s supposed to be. Just wondering if it’s possible they’ve had a different one on it or the numbers changed at all? The flywheel number should be 1111 404 1204 I’ve been told
