Can anyone here enlighten me on the difference between all the variations of the Stihl 056; e.g. Magnum, Magnum II, Magnum Super, etc. I tried the Search thingy and came up dry.

Thanks for the info, Jeff. We have a Magnum II at work and it's a great saw. I'd like to find one like it for myself, but wasn't sure what the difference was with all those names. Now I know I definitely want a Mag II.:)

The Mag II is really the only way to go with this saw. For how much it weighs, and what's available, why carry a standard or even Super? If you're going to lug it around, get the MII. Plus, if you have the Super, you'll be thinking the whole time, "man, this could be a MII....but it's not...."

you also had the 045 (50mm) and points then the 045 super (52mm) same as the 056 AV and these parts interchange with the 056's as well.

Actually, only the very earliest 045s were 50mm (75cc), then Stihl switched to 52mm (81cc) at some point, but still called it a straight 045. Late seventies was the 045 Super, 54mm (87cc). Personally, I've never had or seen a 75cc 045, but they do exist in the parts book. I'd like to have on to complete my collection.

The main difference between the 045 and 056 barrels (other than possible porting differences) is the 056 barrel has some cooling fins trimmed back to allow clearance for the factory piped muffler.

How to identify 045 or 056

The latest 056 thread prompted me to ask a couple of questions:

I have now worked on a fair number of both models for an amateur (but about a day's worth for Lakeside). All 045s had the inner side plate held in place by the bar studs. All 056s I have met had larger holes in the side plate to go over the studs and a screw to secure it to the crank case. None of the 045s I have met has had a threaded hole between the bar studs.

Is this a reliable way of telling the two apart?

Next question - a clear sign of ignorance - was there ever a model of 056 with points as new? Stihl's habit of updating IPLs to pretend nothing different has occurred previously makes it pretty difficult to work it out.

Thanks.

The 056 was not trimmed (at least not the early ones) The super, mag and magII were trimmed. The 056 did not have the pipe.

I've given up in looking at subtle nuances to tell the differences... every time I figure one out I find one that does'nt fit the pattern... but I'd add your to my data base, for now...

Yes, the early 056 had points...

evolution

Kind of interesting to see where all this ended up.
051, 045, 056, 064, 046.
That is the evolution of the logging saw out of this shop. Wonder if the 461 will be next, or if there is another new design on the horizon.

Do the Mags and MagIIs use the same bolt patterns? I have a Mag that runs and cuts fine, and I have a new MagII piston and cylinder. Will the MagII top end fit on the Mag case?

What is the story with the ignitions on these? I remember someone saying that the parts were no longer available but there was an after market kit, Atom maybe?

The Mag and Mag2 use the same bolt pattern.

The BOSCH ignitions are not available. You can convert it to the later SEM ignition (used on the TS350/360 chop saw) but you'll need the correct flywheel.

You can't use the aftermarket modules due to the 4 poles and construction of the flywheel magnets.

I know of three -

1)Points
2)Bosch
3)SEM

I've got a 4th ignition. Bosch came in an early style and a later style. My 045 Super, according to the previous owner, had the early version. He said it was real tempermental, sometimes wouldn't even start. He got a later Bosch ignition as a retrofit kit. If it wasn't such a pain in the neck to pull the flywheels, I'd get some pics for you. Plus, it's kind of cold over here.
