you also had the 045 (50mm) and points then the 045 super (52mm) same as the 056 AV and these parts interchange with the 056's as well.
The main difference between the 045 and 056 barrels (other than possible porting differences) is the 056 barrel has some cooling fins trimmed back to allow clearance for the factory piped muffler.
Actually, only the very earliest 045s were 50mm (75cc), then Stihl switched to 52mm (81cc) at some point, but still called it a straight 045. Late seventies was the 045 Super, 54mm (87cc). Personally, I've never had or seen a 75cc 045, but they do exist in the parts book. I'd like to have on to complete my collection.

The 056 was not trimmed (at least not the early ones) The super, mag and magII were trimmed. The 056 did not have the pipe.
OK, I'm wrong about that. But you're wrong about the 045 thing! And 2 wrongs make a right.:sword:

The latest 056 thread prompted me to ask a couple of questions:
I have now worked on a fair number of both models for an amateur (but about a day's worth for Lakeside). All 045s had the inner side plate held in place by the bar studs. All 056s I have met had larger holes in the side plate to go over the studs and a screw to secure it to the crank case. None of the 045s I have met has had a threaded hole between the bar studs.
Is this a reliable way of telling the two apart?
Next question - a clear sign of ignorance - was there ever a model of 056 with points as new? Stihl's habit of updating IPLs to pretend nothing different has occurred previously makes it pretty difficult to work it out.
Thanks.
