I am working on a Stihl saw that has no badging. I was told it was an 064, but it looks similar to an 066. the SN is 19136811. I couldn't find a portal to search for model via sn. I need to find the proper flywheel and recoil for it. is it an 064 or and 066? is there another way to determine the model? Thanks in advance. Ben

There is and its been posted several times, one needs to just look at the oil pump to know for certain and I have heard all of the excuses not to be bothered. I f the oil pump has a hose feeding the bar oil to the chainbar pad it is an 064, if it has no hose it is an 066/MS660

The 064 was built with a metallic frame extending out on the filter base that holds the air filter into position. I believe that frame never showed up on an 066 or the 660. But, I could be wrong.

I wondered about that because I swear I had a early 066 with it. But saw long gone.

Checking IPL on 066 it shows it and the later one.

I have a very early 066 and it looks like part #18 on the exploded view in previous post. The bar oil pump is the way; hose or no hose.

Some of the early 066's certainly had alloy filter holders and air box covers, they also had the thin recoil cover and smaller crank and alloy flywheels, pretty much what the 064 had- same 1122 family- until the weaknesses were discovered by the larger capacity and changes were made- culminating in the rounded top cover, decomp valve fitted, wide recoil cover, larger crank, HD2 air filtered and poly flywheeled 066 just before the MS660.
This question has been asked in a couple of threads- both times replied to correctly by pioneerguy600- the oil pump and delivery from the pump to the bar pad is the only true "tell".

For the size of the wood/trees I cut here I like my early 064 flatop, I built this one with a NOS piston cylinder and bearings , clutch bearing and drum. It took a bit of searching but found all pieces from an older Stihl stocking dealer. Th saw is light and nimble unit with the same cutting speed in the wood here as my two 066 and a MS660, they only run 32" and 36" bars for me. Longer bars than tht the 066 may come out ahead but likely not be much.

Last one I built up has original old 064 bottom end, Meteor piston and cylinder, starter and cover and transparent tank off a 640, clutch cover off of something 1122- maybe 066 as I have more of those parts- great saws and when I started in forestry the boss ran 064 while the rest of the crew had shiny new 066's- he could outcut us all.
Was the perfect Stihl answer to the then great power to weight ratio 181 Husqvarna.
