I was thinking that I would like to do a project saw from the ground up, if need be. So I thought that a bowsaw would be a cool project, and I would like it to be an 066. I would like to find a fairly late model, say from the late 90's or so. While I cant afford to dole out a wad of cash for a brand new pro saw all at once, It would not be a problem to spend that amount or more over a period of months or longer. Besides, It would give me great pride, and be alot of fun to build it myself. Sort of like a frame up restoration of a classic car. My Questions are: Are there multiple versions of 066's, like av,ave, magnum, ect. ? Which would be the best? Are there years or versions to stay away from? I would like to document this project in pictures and possibly video., and everyones help is greatly appreceated.

Well to honest, My wife bought me my 390, and I love that saw. So she wandered why I wanted a bigger saw. Her uncle has an 056 mag, with abow on it that he wont sell, but will never use. she felt bad, so she suggested that i should buy my own. so I decided to build. but I plan on a 28" bar when she is not looking.

I'm aware of the 066Magnum and 066 Red Lite...still not exactlt clear on what that red light is supposed to tell you. As for the bow, make sure you get one with the 3003 mount, 12.5mm slot. Otherwise you'll be in a position of needing shims. The 3002 bows work great as long as they stay aligned but since they have 14mm slots they eventually come out of alignment, and interfere with the chain's progress and the saw's bar lube system. I suppose you know that these things can be dangerous as Andy said, and an 066 is a lot of power. Have your relative show you the ropes with his bowsaw before you go out there cutting. You need to always keep both guards and the spur on your bow. The spurs need to remain firmly against the wood throughout the cut. Stand well ot of the saw's kickback path and chaps and a face shield would be a good idea. As far as scoring a parts saw, ebay is your friend, but this time of year they may go for more than they're worth. You might also get lucky and get a guy from here to sell you one. If you get a 3003 mount bow, you can also run it on your 390. A 390 is what I am running that 16" bow on,

Great advice that I will definitely take with me. Also thanks for the tips about the 3003 mounts. Baileys chainsaw parts on ebay has parts manuals with complete parts numbers, as well as shop service manuals. those will be my first purchase.

I've found crankcases on ebay, for the 066. Some of the descriptions list them as old style cases. What is the difference between old and new? Is there any way to tell the difference from a pic?
