I am a chainsaw user, not a mechanic by any means so I may be out of my element here. Yeah, I know....users are losers...

I am looking at a newer looking 066 at a pawn shop locally. I bought my 044 there but I had a d@mn good mechanic check it out first. Mechanic is gone.. :(

$575 for a pretty new looking 066 (w/compression button). I want it sssooooo bad.

I also don't want to get ripped off. What should I look for (other than the obvious that it is at a pawn shop)?

I don't mind paying for a pro to check it out, I just don't know one.

Any signs to look for to red flag, "hey this saw is trashed!" or this saw has been run with straight gas?

The saw has been in the back for months but the owner(confidential) was paying on it. It just went out 4sale last week.

36" bar, aftermarket dogs

Suggestions please

Take a scrench with you and a small mag or mini mag.
Pull the spark plug. Look for carbon build up (black) and scratches on the cyclender walls.
If the guy asks why just tell him you have never seen the inside of one of these saws before. Also, pull of the side plate and look for anything that doesn't look right. If it is dirt clean it.

Good luck,
Chris

If the saw has been run with straight gas it and has scored the piston/cylinder it will run sluggish. The best thing to do is to remove the muffler cover and look but be prepared to buy a new gasket if you ruin the old one.

575.00 you say? Do you think it's a fair price?

If the piston looks anything like the picture… run man… run run run

Thanks, wow, thanks.

The 044 that is still a great saw had a tag on it for $375. $190 is what I walked with it for. Tree man turned crack head pawned the saw.

I'll check it out again on thursday. I don't want to be seem anxious - whatever I see when I look at it, I will be sure to frown or keep a good poker face. If it is gone before thurs, it wasn't meant to be....

Plastic on all parts just looks new.

Did I say thanks?

Thanks

Nate

Are you finding those saws in Austion? I will be looking for a 260/260PRO, when I get back from my vacation in Kuwait and Iraq. If I can pick one up that is in good condition that will save me from paying the $420 that a new one costs in Killeen, it would be great.

Hal

Silverblue,

What caused the piston damage you showed? I got an 045 Super with a piston tore up like that on the intake side. My friend thought it was bad gas, but when I pulled it apart I found that all the crankcase screws were loose--some were just barely tight others wobbly. The oil tank wouldn't seal and leaked bar oil to the ground like crazy. I suspect that air/oil was leaking into the crankcase also.

The jug cleaned up OK, but I found a NOS kit. Got her back together and now it's the best saw I have--at least till I get my parts for the 075.

Later, Chris B.

Still playing hard to get with this saw. I'll check it out tommorrow.

Hal - occasionally I hit the pawn shops seeing what I can find. Usually just craftsman or homelite.

I'll keep my eye out for an 026

Pawnshops always want an arm and a friggin leg for POS tools. What works best when bargaining??

Hi Chris,
That piston was from an ebay 066 of which the seller hyped up a story that the saw was checked over, latter he admitted only to running the saw briefly to check it out. Most likely the piston damage was done by running with no oil, and the cylinder fins were filthy possibly leading to overheating.

Luckily I did pull the muffler and noticed the damage and the seller sent some replacement parts (of which I modified a bit).

Working on a billet aluminum muffler and carbon fiber top and air cleaner cover. Should be quite the saw when it’s finished.

pawn or e-bay

If that 066 is in excellent condition it might not be a bad purchase. But like others have said your past the price of a e-bay "good running 066" If ya can get the pawner to let you examine the saw really closely like take off the muffler cover 4 small screws you can get a flash light on the piston and check for damage. And all of the usual things spark, compression, compression release, dirt, cracks. If the guy that pawned it was paying on it, it must have some value. but try to negociate that price down a little. Good luck The Hoosier!!!!

Sharpen your chain it's a jungle out there!!!!!!

My bad, $579. Went back today. They abosolutely said no to it leaving the store. I pulled it a few times and it started. Idle was pretty good but seemed to cycle up and down a bit.

One bar nut is missing. Air filter is pretty good.

My camera crapped out before the auto focus could snap a decent pic.

This pic will hurt yer eyes.

Even though this pic is fuzzy, you can make out a few grooves w/black crud on the piston. It had scoring/ridges. I honestly don't know what normal looks like.

Hypothetically speaking of course, if I did take the muffler off, take a look, and then put it all together, and I couldn't get it to start, what is up with that?? Did I not get that seal back in correctly?? Eitherway, I said thanks and bye!!!

I am going to let it sit for a while, if it is there in a month and they will let me take it to a mechanic, maybe....

Here is an infocus pic of the saw.

The important picture was the one that was out of focus, the one of the piston.
The outside of the saw looks good, but the bar and chain don't.

When you replaced the muffler and tried to start it again, it was possibly just slightly warmed up and you may have choked it, causing flooding. You know how two strokes can be. I doubt you did anything wrong reassembling. Although, hard starting could be an indication of big problems.

Get a new picture of the piston...or pull the muffler off a few of your saws and get an idea of what a good piston should look like.

I tried to clean up the out of focus picture of the cylinder, all I will say is get some quotes on a brand new model from a few dealers and offer the pawn shop half price or less of a new one including any taxes. If you’re going to use the saw on a regular basis figure out how long the payback would be.

In my case even though I bought a used 066 at the beginning of the year and it has paid for itself, it’s now more beneficial for me to buy new equipment and write it off on my income taxes.

Nate, will they give you a warrantee??

No - the guys says that since it works, no warranty or taking is to be checked out. Sounds like he is hiding something? I said no warranty and I will take it for $200.

With the 044, they let me check it out.

Sorry about dropping the ball on the money shot.

The bar is mediocre at best. Chain is cashed. I would want a 25" anyway. A 36" here is just silly. I make cuts like that once every other month at best. It has signs of short cuts in maintanance, like the missing bar nut replaced with a small nut and washer.

Thanks for everyone's input and excuse me for being such a dumb bunny in the chainsaw forum.

Nate

Mike - it did smell flooded.

Brian, you mean you have to mix oil and gas??? I worked for a guy like that before!! Sharpen a chain more than once a week???? NO, you'll wear it out!! I hate dealing with people like that and refuse to do so!! I will NOT work with junk equipment!!!

Those are the same people that make a sawing motion like the are using a crosscut saw.

I'm staying away from the saw. I am looking to fall in love and have a relationship, not get screwed!!
