Dogs on this 070 longer than most? Deep bark on west coast trees? Not too familiar w these older saws. But…. All saws should sound like this…. 🙂 we used this wonderful saw in our Polk Co. GA tornado response last year. The Sherriffs Dept mobilized with us and escorted us to every site! Many 4-5 ft oaks.

There are many different sized dogs for the 070, 090 and 090G ,some were OEM and others were custom made for the types of tree bark they would be used in. My 090 had very tiny dogs as it was intended to be used as a coastal cedar blocking saw while my 070 came with much larger dogs for West Coast Redwood felling. My Contra S ,also came with long sharp dogs much like those in the pics above but they were painted bright red . Many of these large frame saws ended up on milling frames with the dogs removed and I have seen many up for sale with them missing. I ran an early model 090 with the first AV setup on it that had a very small set of dogs on it as it was only set up to cut local thin bark trees.

Thank you…. Learning things…. When were these saws manufactured…. I’ve heard this was one of the best Stihl saws ever?

I read somewhere that this saw was manufactured in the mid 70's...I think I have the manual somewhere...I'll poke around and see if I can find it and post it here for you to see if you would like.

The time line for these big frame saws is a bit difficult to nail down to just a year or month of when they first sold here in North America. Discussions have centered around 1959 to 60 for the early Contra saw and a bit later like 1968 - 69 for the 070 and 090 saws with the 070 and possibly the 090 still being made for the third world markets. They certainly were the biggest and toughest of all the modern Stihl saws intended mostly for the big West Coast trees in NA but they are widely used wherever big tree species are being harvested.

This a note from my friend who owns the 070 saw:
“I bought it while I was stationed in WA. There was an old guy that had a chainsaw shop since the 60s that had it and rebuilt it with brand new 50 year old parts. I believe he said it was a forest service before he got it. He had been offered a lot of money for it by collectors but said he wouldn’t sell it unless someone was going to use it…”

The West coast saws usually had the largest/longest felling dogs to help handle the heavy thick bark found on the tree species there, Redwoods come to mind. My 090 only has a 60" bar on it currently but often had the 72" on it when used for felling out there, the 070 has a 48" on it but often had the 60" when in bigger trees. They command a high price now as there are fewer running originals all the time, many have been mounted to milling frames and milling even wears them out over long time use. None of my big frame saws have been used for milling, I have brand new NOS piston and cylinders for them if ever needed, the six shoe clutches are also expensive and getting scarcer locally.

Just wondering what HP specs are for these saws?
