I am now the owner of the 088 that I returned and its been an big mess (dont buy chainsaws off ebay).
I need to change the crank seal on the chain side, is it hard? any good Ideas so that I dont muck it up?

I need to also change the impluse line also but that seems to be very easy.
Is the clutch hard to remove?
thanks alot again.

Also got an 50" bar for it monday.....cant wait.

the clutch shouldn't be too hard to remove, just remember that they are left hand tread(righty loosey, lefty tighty) and you will neede something to stop the piston, i prefer to use a piece of nylon rope just big enough to fit inside the spark plug hole, i melt the end of the rope to ensure no rope pieces are left inside(just in case). and then i use a 3/4" socket on a 1/2" drive breaker bar. i don't use an impact unless i absolutely have to. as for the seal you should be able to CAREFULLY poke a hole in it and fish it out with a pick, press in a new seal and reassemble. whenever im putting a clutch back together i just tighten the clutch down "wrist" tight to make sure it won't be a PITA when i have to take it off again.. hope this helps...this is the way that i do it..other have their ways, and im sure someone else will come along and give you their way of doing things..pick which is best for you and good luck

The PTO side seal on the 088 is an easy one. Just use a standard automotive seal puller and pry it out using several different points. That way you slide the seal out in one piece. Installing the new seal is a snap, use a small amount of lube and a large socket as a tapper (22mm or 1").

The 088 pto side is a pain in the neck.. You NEED either the Stihl crank sleeve or another method (like heavy foil etc) to stop the inner lip from rolling up and messing up the seal. The crank shoulder is very low and the seal is wide. I've messed up more one one in the last year or so.

The sleeve tool is very cheap; maybe your stihl dealer can lend you one.

The clutch can be a struggle to get off - clamp the saw in a big vice by the inner dog before trying. You may as well replace your clutch springs while you are in there - much easier to do with the clutch off.

..and, you need the service manual if you're starting to dig deep into this saw.

I usually just work the seal down to the point where it's almost on the shoulder and then work the rubber lip on using a Snap-On seal installing tool. It's a snap and after replacing about 20 or so, I've never messed one up.

What will the service manual do for me?

Thanks alot for the advice guys.

Show you want you are dealing with and let you look "ahead". I'm sure someone on AS has a copy they can email you.. unlike the 084, this one is available in pdf form.

I find the 088 is a pain bacause the point where the seal is "almost" sitting in the bearing is the point the the lip pops up. The 028 is similar, and in that case the spring invariably rolls off the inside of the seal The tapered crank sleeves are really cheap - I bought all 4 of them and haven't had a problem since.

I put it up there this morning....got like 10 calls on it....I explained every thing that happend and I got the muffler off for them. There is like 5 guys that said, : "well if it runs and it runs good I'll take it for 750, even if its ugly"

I just dont want what happened to me to happen to them if they buy it.....I got the muffler off and they can check it out very well.

800 kinda high but I think I will start high.

Ten calls already?! Geez. And it isn't even firewood season. Sounds like you should have a buyer before too long.

Planning on buying something else instead?

I want to.....You got some thing in mind?
