I ran across a guy today with one of these in his shed. He said he got it used around '90. I asked him if it ran and he cranked it up, sure enough it ran. I asked if he wanted to sell it and he acted like he didn't care all that much about it. He doesn't know the value, and neither do I.

What would be a good price? I bet I could wave a $100 dollar bill and he would go for it. No real bar to speak of, crappy 28' rusty bar.

Is the 'G' a good model? If I got it, could I send it off to one of ya'll chainsawsmiths to get it squared away?

I can't BELIEVE how BIG and HEAVY it is!

I WANT IT!!! :)

Id be interested in buying it off of you for sure, put me first in line if you want to sell it.

Id grab it if it was me

If I'm not mistaken the "G" stands for gear drive, if thats the case then it'll run one he!!'va bar;)

What is gear drive? I thought all chainsaws were gear driven.
Also, I forgot to say that the rear handle is broken. The back part and lower part is missing. The trigger section is okay. That HAS to be repaired, of course.

I don't know doodley really about big saws, but I luv em. And I wanna get this puppy bad.

What is a good price??? Considering the handle replacement. Are parts hard to find?

How much? How much? How much?

:D

Butch, current saw design has the chain sprocket coupled directly to the crankshaft, so that the sprocket spins at engine speed whenever the clutch is engaged.  That saw has a transmission which reduces the output of the crankshaft to half speed at the drive sprocket, thus doubling the torque available to the chain.  It won't cut as fast for most things we do with a chainsaw nowadays but it should be just about unstoppable.  It might not actually be a gear set but instead be a pair of sprockets with a chain.  I've never had one apart nor seen an assembly diagram but it seems I've heard something about a primary drive chain here before.

The industry is going for higher chain speeds and lighter weight; pretty much a 180 from that old horse.

So how much do I offer this guy?

$200? More? Less? Can it be fixed to original specs... or better?

The second I laid eyes on that Orange Suitcase I thought of ya'll woodticks, then I started feeling all funny inside...

It was BEAUTIFUL! :)

Does anyone know why they called it an 090G instead of an 070G? It's bascially an 070 with a gearcase-extended housing.

Wave your $100 and see what happens. It's not a speed saw, but they're fun to play with and have loads history. Not worth as much as a straight 090.

It's a smaller-displacement saw than the 090, and you can't race it (outside of a vintage gear class) because of the drive setup. That's why it's not as valuable as an 090. Good for milling or rough cutting, though.

If you end up paying $300 or less for a gear drive 090 then you're doing good, unless the exterior is REALLY beat up. Decent gear drive 090s usually go for $6-700 on e-bay due to their ability to mill wood on an alaskan sawmill for a long time, because of the strength of the motor. Parts are still available NOS from a lot of northwest and canadian saw shops. I saw a like new 090G on e-bay once, it went for $1400.00.

what do you need a handle for! figured it would fall into the same catagory as your chainbrake!:D :p

Hi Butch, get that 090G for sure. Even at 3 bills its a steal. You can flip it for $$ if it's in good shape.
The only other gear drive Stihl made was a 041G I believe.

Thanks, John.

I was waiting for your response. I'll wave two bills under his face and see if he gos for it.

Will it be hard to get the handle/whatnot fixed? I sure don't trust MY Sthil guy... :(

Hi Butch, New parts are hard to get, but they are out there. The 070 is the same jug wise, except for the gear drive and a few other parts I believe.
