I do the same when I fart at the checkout, wtf, who did that....My old OMC boat motors are 16:1, always end up with a rainbow slick following me around, kayakers get all upset, i find it best to act alarmed myself rather than reassure them it’s normal
Probably just wanted 30wt mixed thoughI found a montgomery ward saw on the curb (rebadged remington) with manual oiler. I was shocked when I saw it requires a 16:1 ratio. I'd never heard of an engine requiring that much oil!
This gets argued about a lot in boat circles, fact is bearings and tolerances aren’t what they are now, for me, if i cared about it, I would use the recommended dosage. Babbitt bearings need a little extra. It’s from back when straight 30wt non detergent motor oil was used as the mix oil. As prev stated, modern 50-1 will work just fine.
No need for 16:1 with modern oils, good for insect control though. This is the first I heard of.. 16;1 MIX
- #1
I HAVE SOME 40:1 , 32;1, 50:1 ... NOT GOING TO DO ANOTHER
Which mix would you use ?
It's for a Craftsman -358-356070
Lawnboy lawnmowers had babbit bearings requiring 16:1 OMC Marine rated TCW-3 in the late 60's early 70's , no black flys in the neighbourhood back then !This gets argued about a lot in boat circles, fact is bearings and tolerances aren’t what they are now, for me, if i cared about it, I would use the recommended dosage. back in the 60's 2T oil was straight Sae.30 same for bar oil lol.The good old days !Probably just wanted 30wt mixed though
OMC went to needle bearings around 63-4-5-6, I believe. I have a 65’ 28hp and a 67 that one calls for 24:1 the other 50:1 both engines are identical, I suspect they weren’t trusting of the lighter mixture at first. ...just a theoryLawnboys had babbit bearings requiring 16:1 OMC Marine rated TCW-3 in the late 60's early 70's , no black dots in the neighbourhood back then !
that is true also , tolerances were rather sloppy in the 60,s eventually in the early 70,s true 2 stroke oils were developed and engine technology tightened up and 32:1 became the standard . Oil was 50 cents a quart now some exotics are over $30 , ain't life Grand !This gets argued about a lot in boat circles, fact is bearings and tolerances aren’t what they are now, for me, if i cared about it, I would use the recommended dosage. outboard ? I stated Lawn boy lawnmowers in my example .OMC went to needle bearings around 63-4-5-6, I believe. I have a 65’ 28hp and a 67 that one calls for 24:1 the other 50:1 both engines are identical, I suspect they weren’t trusting of the lighter mixture at first. ...just a theory
I would agree when Babbitt bearing are present , higher viscocity oil is required 16;1 or at least 32:1 with good friction modifiers should be used . I know if any of the lawnboy fanatics heard even 32:1 a lynching would be in order ! lol. This gets argued about a lot in boat circles, fact is bearings and tolerances aren’t what they are now, for me, if i cared about it, I would use the recommended dosage. I was asking about this recently, as stated above OMC made their design change before deciding 50:1 was ok. Seems reasonable I could use 50:1 no problem but consensus was to use recommend ratio. I usually go heavy regardless, but of late ive been using the 67’ 33 hp and using 40:1, she ain’t getting any younger.I would agree when Babbitt bearing are present , higher viscocity oil is required 16;1 or at least 32:1 with good friction modifiers should be used .
