OK so last saturday my friend who lives in a fairly large city called me and said there was a guy with a running john deer splitter for 200 bucks, he fired it up and ran the ram out and back in, i told him to grab it for me, and now i am the new proad owner of a new splitter, i put some fresh gas in it, some new oil and a new air filter, and it now starts on the 2-3rd pull everytime with now priming or anything, it is powered by a briggs 5 horse and the motor runs good most of the time, but when i set a log on the deck hard it will sputter for up to 15-20 sec. and slowly recover, anytime you rock it or hit it with something it will sputter like that. any thoughts as to the cause of this, it has all kinds of power and has split some big (40" +) black oak with no worries, but i would like to get the suptter out.

Trash in carb? Maybe a loose wire? Or bad plug?

Float level in carb too high

Is it one of those engines with the carb mounted on/in the gas tank ?
Briggs makes a carb ( I think it is called the pulse jet, but not sure ) that uses crankcase pulses to pump fuel from the tank up into a "cup" in the carb. All excess fuel just spills over the side of the cup back into the tank. The jet is located in the lower part of the cup. Notice there is no float in the carb, it maintains a constant head level by letting the excess spill over the cup sides. If you shake the engine hard, you can cause the fuel in the cup to splash out. The engine will be running lean until the fuel pump can get the cup filled back up again. Normally, this only takes a second or two at most. 15 to 20 seconds is way too long.
IF the problem gets worse as the tank gets closer to empty, then part of the problem could be low output from the pump. Replacing the gaskets in the pump will usally fix the problem.
Note: the pump is part of the carb and located in/on the fuel tank. You can buy the pump gaskets seperatly or as part of the carb kit.
