I get to sharpen one of those every now and then.Wish the Guy I sharpen for would let me take it and use it for a while.Told Him if he ever parted with it I would take it off his hands.:msp_wink:

I thought it was clapped-out. Clean up the cylinder, MM, delete the base gasket, and go forth, fearing no tree.

It looked pretty rough in the lousy CL pics and I was expecting much worse even after talking to the seller. Right place, right time I guess. I hope to take it all the way down over the winter and rebuild it....., just because.

And thanks for your tips and encouragement on how best to manage my new Husky affliction. It's appreciated!

And it dawns on me that this month is my three year anniversary as an AS member. In '09 my lineup was a Poulan 220, a MS310, and a Ryobi 4-ton electric log splitter. Yeah, I rocked.

Look what you guys have done to me since!!!:givebeer:

Been wanting one of these for a long time. Straight gassed and needs a piston, but otherwise worth every mile creepin' along behind all those damned buggys!

WOW! I bet you jaw and neck are sore now. The jaw from grinning:hmm3grin2orange:, the neck from looking back to see if that buggy was gaining on you! :still_dreaming:

Thanks for indulging my gloating, guys. Truth be told, I was expecting a complete basket case based on the horrible CL pics along with the seller's description over the phone. He admitted the probability of it being straight gassed and also said his dealer suspected some bottom end issues along with a vac leak and it wasn't worth fixing, which we all know is code for "we'll give ya fifty bucks for it toward a new saw".

I think it was brilliant of him to put it on CL and hold out for $70 along with throwing in the Windsor and three chains while he was at it....and holding it for me, ta boot. A real stand up guy. (He really was, and also loves his new MS660.):msp_wink:

Just wish he woulda cleaned this thing up a little better before makin' me drive all that way.:jester:

But here's the real shame...and the gas was still in the tank.

Hope to get into it this weekend to check the bottom end, but it feels pretty solid and isn't making any noise spinnin' it over.

But even if it was just a beat up POS 288 ......., 200 miles and 70 bucks later ......, I'd still feel like it was worth the trip.

And I'd still suck.

Congrats. BTW, I see another OH guy, so how far from Columbus? I need to meet more Ohioans that are afflicted with CAD.

I'm up in Henrietta Twp. just south of Vermilion, 'bout 12 miles south of the lake. Think I may have made your acquaintance at Bill Poor's GTG if you were indeed there?

Good one Poe...........I knew that bar didn't fit that 70E!!!!! Congrats....nice looking saw.....you can always fix the P&C.....much harder to fix ugly.........

I hafta admit, this score is gonna give the 70E a run for the money, but the J-Red is real special for me on a whole different level of appreciation for many reasons.

But this could be pretty cool, too!:chainsaw:

You never know until you start the clean up, but that one doesn't look very promising.

Yeah, the scoring area looks pretty rough, but I'm encouraged by the remaining machine marks being so distinct and hoping the cylinder held up like any venerable, badass 288 should.

I certainly don't entertain any possibility of re-using the piston if that's what you mean.

Some patience and a little elbow grease and it should clean right up. Hell, I could almost re-use the piston too, but I have a Meteor on the way for it....., just because.

Looks like the guy caught it pretty quick and shut it down like he said he did. Bottom end is nice and tight and clean, too.

I'm still pinching myself over this one. What boggles my mind is the seller's local Husky dealer telling him the saw wasn't worth fixing, (it did still have the service tag on it...."blown up"):dizzy:

That is a nice 288 Lite. I have one that looks almost that good that I bought new. You SUCK... :msp_thumbup:

Is that the one from Akron Craigslist? If so you're lucky my CAD is in remission or it would have been mine. I actually had the phone in my hand several times.:hmm3grin2orange:

I would like to grab that Shure microphone on your bench and shout out..."You Suck!!!"

BTW: Any problems with the Amish Mafia while prowling the countryside? :hmm3grin2orange:

You neve know until you start the clean up, but that one doesn't look very promising.

Lotta work and patience...

I've had to have met you then. I was doing the drawing for that wedge donated to me from Canada

Your lucky I aint into driving for saws anymore, I seen that one the first hour or so put on listed for $100.

It is a shame that the PO straight gassed the saw but the other side of that coin is you wouldn't have it for $70 if he didn't.

This will be a great winter project and a great saw for next year.

BTW I just got a craigslist 70E running last week. It looks to be a low hour abused saw. It had high compression and the piston looked new through the exhaust port. By the caked dirt in the recoil cover and arund the piston it looks like the DPO used it to dig ditches. I spent some quality time with my files and have it sharpened and ready to work on firewood. I am looking forward to running it.
