I've gotta get myself a digital camera, or at least one of the disposable ones for this weekend. About 10 minutes off campus is the largest sycamore to the east of the Mississippi. I think it's something like 94 or 96 inches at DBH. One of my professors placed a value of $89,???.00 on it a couple of months ago. There is also a HUGE siberian elm right next to campus that John Hendrickson said would take 2 semi's to get the wood out  and a full day to grind the stump even with a small loader on site.

Here is a pic of some big arbs that were at a customer's house. They are something like 100 years old, give or take 20 years. Using a scale method that JPS taught me, I estimated their height to be 60' The biggest one's diameter was about 15" You normally don't see them here much taller than 15' and even that is kind of rare.

I had cut down 3 of the smaller ones this summer. They went right out over the driveway and couldn't be dropped straight out. Man, I don't think I have ever been so scared before in my life being in a tree. They were skinny, and leaned out pretty well. The last one was the worst. I had to get within 15 feet of the tips on each one so they wouldn't hit the house. After I cut the first one at the base, a TON of carpenter ants came pouring out. I dropped one of the logs onto the ground, the thing split in half  Both other stems had just as many carpenter ants as the first one did, and almost as much rot.
