Which is better in Red/White Oak on an 036 .325 pitch or .375? Or is there much difference? I only have experience with the .375 and my .375 20" bar got bent last week  I'm looking for a replacement and I find Baileys has a carlton .325 20" with chain for $25!

TIA

I do not like .325 chain. It does not shred nature the way 3/8 seems to. It has its place, making small engines or poor performers keep up the RPM. My choice would be sharp 3/8. How do you like the 036? Did it bog with the original setup?

I have got a 290 with .325 and a 20" bar, when I wear out the last .325 chain that setup is going away. I will put a 18" 3/8 setup on it. If you are looking for a bargain see if the local shops have any used ones. I have not bought a new bar in years.

I believe that .325x8 will be faster in smaller wood, provided it is Stihl RS, because of more cutters. Other .325 chain have smaller cutters, which will at least partly outweight the higher number.
3/8x8 will give you higher chain speed, and is another option in smaller wood.
In larger wood, when chip clearance becomes a factor, I believe 3/8x7 will be better.
Forget .325x7.

This statement is based on tests made by former member Glens, and common sence. I have not tested it myself on an 036.

There are also several other factors that will enter the picture, so the only way to know for sure is to try it yourself, in your own wood.....

Personally, I intend to stay with 3/8" on my MS361, after considering to try .325x9 on a short bar for a while....:rockn: :rockn:

I havent been a big fan of the .325 pitch myself. its ok on real small saws though.

Repeated tests show that on a saw the size of the 036 with a 20" bar, the 3/8" chain will outperform the .325. The 036 is a great saw, used to own them before going up to the newer 361. Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. It's nice to have others people's experience to draw from. I'll stick with my .375, it's always performed well for me but you never know until ya ask. I guess I'm not the only night owl either!
