Rbtree, I've got the 335 muffler off and everything makes sense.

It appears that if you go the walker method. You need to drill deep into the secondary baffle to open up to 5/8 size to match the new 5/8 outlet.

Your method appears to be the simplest.
But which on is better?

Not very scientific, but I calculated the volume by inserting small round spegetti noodles into a 5/8 round tube, the rectangular exhaust flange and the sloted original exhaust port.

Results, total noodles inserted into:

71 into exhaust flange
59 into round 5/8 tube
15 into sloted stock exhaust port

Walker with 5/8 only port = 83% of exhaust flange size

rbtree mod with 5/8 + stock port left open = 103% of original flange size

Using the rule of thumb 1x to 1.25x of exhaust flange size. It appears the rbtree mod is closer to optimim.

Which method shall I use for a stock 335?

After searching thru the past threads, I've come to the conclusion (right or wrong)

I'm better off going with the smaller size exhaust of the walker design of 83% of exhaust flange. Since nothing else will be moded except the muffler.

The dual port muffler (102% of flange) in the pic's are supporting a 45cc cali VS my 35cc

I love it. I'm gonna call ya the noodle modder...

..extraordinaire!

Um, I have the dual port job mounted on 2 335's and 1 Cali....The one I got from Rich Hoffman is the hottest of em all. Perfecto mundo!

Walker's say cylinder porting resulted in small gains on the 335...I'd expect a big gain from the Cali, or I wont do it.

Ok don't laugh... my first muffler mod

Here is rbtree's walker muffler mod (I hope it was OK to use your photo) pointed down :D. I used a .625 ID tube and tried to duplicate the angles and demensions. I left oem slot open, so oem screen fits right in, but is too short to cover enlarged inside port (5/8in oval).

Whew... :) Mike you had me worried, thought you were saying I pointed the exhaust the wrong way. ha ha ha :D :D

Mike, you can sure tell I'm new here. I'll catch on :) :)

Just got back from quick and dirty tuning (enrich until it blubbers). I had to turn down idle by two turns. I'll fine tune with my tach later (12,500 rpm w/chain on). I may have to break off adj screws stops to get tuned.

WOW!!! does it run good. (a little loud) First impressions are it outcuts my 024.

Thanks rbtree for the help.

Husky shaped a small deflector into the plastic muffler cover, probably ineffective, and seems to normally not include the large metal deflector. Either way, both would be unnecessary if they'd aim the exhaust downward.

A couple of mine now have no deflector and still have the original port...seems no problem as the new big port handles most of the gases.

OK OK, I admit it. big time fun doing this mod! 046 up next....

Anyone got pictures of a dual port 046/460 muffler? I've searched up and down, cannot find any pics.

thanks for your help..

For the 046 muffler you'll be best off to simply get the "Magnum" muffler front cover from Stihl. The part number has been stated several times on this forum and a search for it will get you what you need.

Your stuff looks okay (once I can get to it that is) but I want to offer a technical bit of advice. It's easiest if you use an underscore instead of a space in a file name so no special precautions need be taken, ever. If you must use a blank space and you put that file on a web server, you must replace each blank space with %20 in each link to it or the URL will not work using standards-based browsers or other similar tools. All I see in your posts are "broken link" images from my browser and trying to fetch them with my browser (and other tools) returns an error page from your server.

I know you're evidently seeing the images in your post just the way you'd anticipated, but that's because you're using a browser that goes beyond the standards and simply got lucky this time. The official rules of the WWW state no blank spaces in URLs.

Here's what you have:

http://tjtech.org/~CPF/CY/335 muffler mod 2.jpg
(one shortened URL plus 3 spurious entities)

Here's what it's supposed to be:

http://tjtech.org/~CPF/CY/335%20muffler%20mod%202.jpg
(one full URL)

It would be easiest, though, to use 335_muffler_mod_2.jpg as the filename in the first place so none of the special encodings are required (though there are other characters which are illegal in URLs so must also be encoded in them). Microsoft is famous for making users of it's software look dumber than a box of rocks, so I don't blame you for this -- they should get it right or at least educate their victims.

Glen, Thanks for giving tips about posting pics on this forum.

You can sure tell I'm green, but I'm trying hard to get aquainted with how things work.

I'm using phoenix .4 browser. I try not to use IE, unless there is just no way.

I'll insert _ instead of spaces. Just got everything changed. please let me know if I need to change anything else.

Thanks for your patience.

PS I would sure like to mod my 046 muffler for a second port. If you install only the front cover. What will that do? I've found several part numbers posted for a dual port oem muffler.

I sure would like to mod my own, instead of buying one. Much satisfaction in doing your own work.

Hey, no problem. I'm just glad you didn't take it poorly.

I think I had phoenix 0.4 but have updated to where it's now firefox (third name) 0.8

I only use it very rarely just because of it's IE-like behavior in situations like this as well as many others, all the while flying the "Standards-based" banner. It's quite silly they don't see the irony in that. Mozilla even makes the scrollbars work in the broken manner of Windows and thus different than every other graphical program I use. And what's up with the text-insert cursor while the pointer is over the body of a page where no editing can be performed? Oh, well.

The "Magnum" front cover has a large screen-covered and physically protected opening. I got the equivalent one for my 066 and dropped right at 15% cutting time just swapping them out.

After digging in past posts, one can find a mountain of info on stihl muffler mods.

beavergirl has got a dual port design posted for an 046 that needs a deflector for the new port. I could not find any more pic's on 046/460 modded mufflers.

I'll be calling my local dealer for part # 1128 140 0616 dual port oem cover to see if it's still available. My first preference is to moded it myself. Could anyone that has the 046 stihl dual port oem muffler please post some pic's?

After my pathetic looking hack job on my 335 plastic cover. I would like a cleaner job on my 046. If I had another 335 case to cut into again. I would use a hole saw at a very low speed, then hand file the rest with a rattail file.

Even though I did a pro job on the muffler itself, it still looks like a hack job.

The limiter caps aon the 335 can be removed without damaging them. You need to come in from the top with a little screwdriver and open the little plastic clippy thing with one hand, hold the saw with the other hand, pull the cap straight out with your third hand.
Then once the carb is set, replace the limiter cap in the center position. I like the husky limiter caps 'cus you can adjust them with your fingernail in the tree.

dont mean to bust u thread ,,but i got to say.. that walker mufler put me in mind of a fellar named bobbit. after he made his wife mad.:)
