I gotta 3400 for ya Aaron.

Thank you kind sir.

Maybe orange would work?

I think that I got enough extra parts in my haul last week to get this one up and running. Will be a mixture of green and orange...

Interesting. Is that a 3400 or 3700? Dayton Orange? Looks like a good candidate for an IHC Red repaint.

That can be done pretty easily. I painted one red once. Sure probably confuse someone down the road years from now. :)

Gregg,

Looks like you did a fine job there Gregg. I saw that one (and was wondering what the deal was) while I was coveting the Craftsman 3.7 in your earlier "family portrait" shots...:D

Ok, so is it a bad sign when you save a 3400 Poulan Counter Vibe from the garbage truck. I was working today on side of the road. Guy comes out to the curb sets out his trash and a Poulan Saw. I asked him about it and he said take it before the garbage truck gets it. So like a fool I did. Now I admit I don't need it, but I couldn't see it going into the trash. Do I have a problem. I don't know the first thing about Poulan's. This one's green. Every saw I own is red or orange or orange/white.

Got my 3400 Poulan from a pile of trash on the side of the road.
The saw started on the second pull and had a full tank of fuel in it.
I used it a few times but it's collecting dust now inside of the barn.

Interesting. I didn't know that some of the Craftsman 3.7's were Poulan 3800's. I also don't know what the dif is between a Poulan 3700 and a Poulan3800. Gotta do some studying, as I'm showing my Poulan ignorance. The only other Sears/Craftsman 3.7's that I knew of were the Ropers.

Edit:

Just checked Acres' site. 3800's were Electrolux era saws. Are they otherwise the same as the 3700's? Were the Sears/Craftsman 3.7 branded 3800's red, or were they the ugly grey/black?

Hmmmmmmmm. Gonna have to try and track down a red Poulan 3400 (or repaint a green one red). I like red chainsaws...........:msp_lol:

Really the only difference between the 3800 and 3700 saws was Poulan got cheap and used an unplated cylinder and chrome piston with thicker rings. Both are still 61cc. I've also noticed a carburetor change on some 3800 models too, instead of a Walbro HDB, they used a Zama C3 carb. I have both a Craftsman 3.7 grey and black and Poulan 3800, the Craftsman has the HDB and Poulan has the Zama. They still run just as strong as a 3700, only thing is their vulnerable to cylinder scoring if your not careful.

Nothing wrong with a little mix n' match of color!
Several of the folks here can tell you this one isn't bad for an old junker, built from the scrap bin!

Mike,

I think we need to get together and swap covers. My orange Wizard could use your orange cover and you could use the green cover I was going to put on mine.

Thanks for the info Dave. I only worked on a few of the Craftsman 3.7 saws. Didn't know a 3700 from a 3800 at that time. Did a few carb kits and an auto oil pump IIRC. Not many came into the shop. Mostly the newer plastic-cased crap-o poulan/weedeater made stuff (and those all had chromed pistons IIRC). Think the 3.7 saws I worked on all had Walbro HDB's.

Mike sure looks like you used a lot of differant parts. Bet it runs great though. Is that a 3700 filter cover? I just picked up a NOS 3400 cylinder. Now If I can find a NOS piston, I'll be prepared for the future.
Bob

Yes Bob it is a 3700 cover.
Like I said I built that one entirely out of scrap parts and it was my first port job.
Looking back, I don't have a clue why it runs as well as it does. I guess the good Lord really does look after fools and children!!
Either that or collectively the parts were so thankful that they didn't get "the furnace" that they are doing all they can to show their gratitude.
The port work on that saw is really BAD!

LOL, I have run that saw! Thats Mikes' famous or infamous "ugly bastard" Its a very strong 3400! I have one like that also. Mish mash of parts and ported. Been wanting to go back inside and see if I can get more out of it. Just havn't got around to it yet.

Did you port the exhaust and intake ports? I've widened exhaust ports but haven't gotten the nerve to touch the intake side. Something about port timing etc. that scares me.

I won't answer for Mike, but I didn't touch the intake on mine. Got to looking at the intake manifold on there. That looks to be the problem with that design. I might try do something with that in the future, if I get bold..LOL
Gregg,

I didn't do anything to the intake port on mine either because as Gregg said, I will guarantee that port will flow all that will pass through the the intake manifold.
I did "tweak" the manifold a bit!!!:hmm3grin2orange:

Ok guru's of Poulan Saws where is the auto oiler on this puppy. Found the mechanism for the manual oiler but no crank driven pump anywhere. Is this a mule or an early model.
