Hey Everybody, I'm New :blob2:

I am not a professional but cut alot of clearings and roads in the winter. I used to use my fathers Husqvarna 254XP. I jsut recently bought my own saw, a 346XP.

From all standpoints the 346 is better, less weight, lower vibrations, easier cutting, but a little less power and poor dogs.

Where can I buy a bigger set of dogs (spikes) for the 346XP, which other model saws can fit on the 346?

Bailey's sells a set of large dogs for $21.95. I use them on my husky365. Not too sure if they will fit on yours...send them an email asking if they will fit. IMO - I think they will fit. Good luck.

there are several options here. i may have some sitting around(if i didn't throw them away). i don't use them because a sharp saw doesn't need bumper spikes. i'll look around here for you.
next would to be maintain a good sharpness on your chain.
or, you can buy new spikes.
an other option is to take the ones you already have and trace the bolt pattern onto a piece of paper than add the size of the spikes you want. trace that over to a sturdy piece of metal and cut and drill it out. or take the metal to a machine shop and have them cut it for you. marty

Maybe some people use falling dogs for purposes other than what they were intended for. They are not for prying or for more leverage, they are a pivot point, and they will save wear on the front of your saw. They also make it easier on yourself and easier to make you're felling cuts. The diagonal cut on a notch (especially a Humboldt) is reason enough.
True, you don't need them but for falling they definitely have a useful purpose.
I do agree on the necessity of a sharp chain.

They REALLY help with a big saw, and a 34" bar on it when you want to make progress cutting.

I put a set of 357 dogs on my 346, certainly not oversize dogs but much better than the stock ones it came with, I havnt cut anything with bark thick enough for them to matter to much. I thimk it cost me like 9 bucks. :blob2:

Also if you are feeling displeased with the lower power, before you run too many tanks thru that pig send it to Dozer Dan, or ehp. You will do nothing but giggle like a loon while you are screaming thru wood holding on to such a tiny little saw. :blob5:

i have witnessed people using the bumper spikes as if the saw was a prybar.
the cutters were dulled in a prior cut and "i just want to make this one last cut" setting the bumper spikes in the wood and lifting the rear handle with all they're worth. some have actually pulled the buffers and isolators loose.
when making the felling cuts, pick your target and use the sights on the saw. flat, level and straight in and down for the face. for the back cut, bore in, set the sights. than, flat, level and striaght back. for bucking, let the saw pull it self through the wood with a little help from gravity. for up cuts the bumper spikes will only hang-up. they are no help there. marty

Ok to better clarify, the problem I am having is when making a cut at the base of a standing tree, I am not able to pivot the saw on the tree as I was with the 254XP. I went back to the 254 for a couple of trees and found the more aggressive dogs helped to hold the saw on the tree where I wanted.

Again, I am not a professional by any means, just cutting cause I need to clear land and make roads. Never been taught how to cut just trial and error until I got my own system down. I have cut alot just dont know how to say what I am doing if that makes any sense.

Will the 350 model dogs fit the 346 and are they more aggressive?

sounds like you are using them as you should. A guy dosnt always need oversize dogs, but on thick bark like older Doug fir, or on large fluted, rough stems they are a key part of saw operation. Many folks are reluctant to put larger dogs on a saw because "it gives up usable bar length." Never seen that to be a problem. :blob2:

P Woozel, it is probably too late to send it away.

I bought the saw this past fall and probably has around 100 hours on it so far. Havent really been counting, but I do know that in the last three days I put 20 hours on it.

It seems pretty broke in now, has more "bark" in the exhaust note than the 254.

But the 254 has well over 1000 hours on it with no work done to the motor.

Thank you to whoever mentioned the 357 dogs as those were ones I was most interested in. Just got to get to the dealer and order some, unless I can get them online.

Rugergunz,

Welcome to the site - nice to have you aboard...

I am not sure if the 357 dogs will work, but if they will then you will probably be happy with them - it sounds like you got yourself a nice saw and I am sure it will give you a lot of years good service...

dozer dan,dave niegra and ehp .. a little moneybut a big difference.jmo
i understand u neethe dogs tho .. thick bark an such..

I took an extra set of 357 inner dogs and put them on my 340 after some minor
grinding to the bottom of the dog. Other than that it fit just fine.
I'm still not sure why I did it other than the kids went to bed early that night.
