I have been researching what to buy for a long time and have narrowed it down to the 353 and the 357xp. I have never owned my own saw and haven't used one in 10 years. I want a good saw that will last me a long time, and I think that the 357xp would suit me well. Do you think that it would be a good choice for a novice such as myself?

Welcome to the site.
I am not sure if it will be a good saw for you or not as I only use Stihl.
Someone will be along soon enough to guide you on the Husky.
Just make sure you choose a good dealer and buy some quality protective apparel and you will start growing your own army of saws.

The Jonsereds 2156c is identical saw if you have a dealer near by you may want to compare it pricewise. Like they said it all depends what you are going to be cutting the most. But having a good dealer near by can be a great help for service and questions.

Right now I just need to cut up some 12-16" oaks that were downed when I built my house in March. I am going to be moving to Southern Maryland soon and have 20 acres up there. I will have a variety of trees to cut when I build my house there. I will also need to cut a few trees as needed for firewood each year and will have the occasional large diameter, over 30".

You will not go wrong with the 357. I run my 357 with an 18" bar and it rips through wood. For what you'll be cutting you very happy with the extra power over the 353

Go for it. If you want to get by in life with one saw, make it one that can do some work. A 60cc saw is about as "perfect" as you can get for an "all arounder". Not too big, not too small.

Get the 357, don't look back.

I bought the 353 as a first saw, in a long term plan to have it as a limbing/trimming saw with a yet to be purchased larger saw for bucking/limbing and finally a big damn saw for bucking the big ???? that Im sure to be in when I get my OWB purchased and installed.

Anyways, after crunching the numbers I'd saw the 357xp would be a good start for one saw to do it all. I don't have one, I think I want one so I've researched the hell out of it. Really, the 353 is undergunned in the bigger wood and gets a little too hot IMO.

Personally, I think Im going to opt for the Stihl ms361, the direct equivilent to the 357xp... because Im curious and need to expirement:ices_rofl:

Yes! and when you get tired of running it stock. Send it to dneiger Big Dave Neiger for a woods port and watch them chips fly.
I have yet to find anyone in my part of ohio that has a 361 to compare with. Would like to run one to see what all the talk is about for sure, because I hear this saw takes really real to mods too.
Anybody close, got a 361, near central ohio hour north of columbus?

In 12" to 16" oak, the 357/2156 would be the far better choice; and welcome to the site.

I agree, but also consider the stihl MS361........:blob2: :blob2:

As I see it, a 3 cube saw like the 353 will be too small for your needs, unless time desn't matter to you.

I know that, for some odd reason  , just go for it......:greenchainsaw:

I'd also go for the 361/357/2156, but also leave room in your budget for your helmet/chaps/steel toe boots. Your legs, toes and the bulge at the top of your neck will thank you.

And of course you could also consider the Dolmar 5100 S, if you have a dealer in the area. Or a 7900, if you're really going to cut 30" wood.

Yes the 357 is a good saw and will suit your needs.
This thread is starting to get distorted So before you start getting confused.
there is nothing wrong with the 357xp.

Depends on how "occasional" occasional is. If those 30"ers are say <1% of your cutting, I wouldn't hesitate to get a 60cc... if they're >10% I'd be tempted to bump it up to a 70-something saw.

xp

Get the 357xp for what you have described. If you are planning on only having (1) saw... never log on to arboristSite again, or your signature will start to look like mine.

As far as I know, it is right on the heals of the 357xp for torque, but not the MS361...........
