I don't own any saws as of yet. This is my first one and I will use it mainly for cutting up firewood and some dead trees on my land. I expect to cut maybe 3+ cords of wood a year.

heaven help u man. u start with an 372 .
and u done took all the fun outa getting the best ....,by owning what aint the best first ,,. so u can know the difference.. i mean where the h--- do u go from there. 7900 mabe ,but we ll see.

I have done my fair share of buying not what I wanted only later to buy what I really wanted. The problem is I don't know what to buy. On my bass boat, I thought I only needed a 90hp on the small lake I fish, but now I wan't a Mercury 300hp

Although it was meant in a humors way, there is a cretin amount of logic with starting small or sometimes used when getting into something new, like saws, boats….

If you start off with the best and most expensive, your mistakes are often expensive and more painful. If you start with a decent lower end saw or used one, there will be things that need fixing and you will make mistakes. The good news is this kind of forces you to learn and doesn’t hurt as much. I know many will disagree, but it has worked well for me! Plus it really makes you appreciate the good stuff!

That’s all I have to say about that!

Go with the 357xp send it to Dennis or Ken . It will be like having the best of two worlds power and light weight

I'm curious why not mod the 372, and have that much more power?

here we go again...

at 3+ cords/yr., buy an MS250 or comparable. (unless, of course, those 3+ cords are all from the same tree.)

Stihl MS250, Stihl MS 270, Husky 55 Rancher, Husky 353, or a Jonsered 2151 will suit your needs plenty for 3 cords a yr

Brian,

Are you picking on me with that Mercedes comment ? If I want to drive a Viper to deliver pizza that is my business. My punk 18 year old boss at Dominos keeps telling me "it's 30 minutes or less NOT 3 MINUTES or less". I just like to be fast.

River Hill i have an older 039 stihl i bought new in 98,with the 16" bar this saw really rips.Side by side with my almost brand new,but broken in 365 special Husky, the 039 tore the husky a new one, plus a lot of dealers will cut ya good deals on the 029 and 039,and while your at it,check out Deeres comparison chart, seems they got the competition beat in more than a few different size classes

I ended up with the 372xp and have no regrets. Running a 20" bar all day almost feels like I'm not working sometimes. Although if I could run a 24" bar on my 346xp I might not pick up another saw again.:D

I got to use a 395 for an extended period of time today, it was pretty sweet. Its the only one around here that I'm aware of, he bought it out of town.

I especially like the location of the decompression button.

Now, I gotta find someone with a Dolmar!

I would like to sell my 346xp, which has now cut about 5 face cord, and get a 357xp. Paul

Sprocket & Bar difference

Is the sprocket assembly (Clutch) different between the 357 and 372. The external clutch of the 357 makes it difficult to get the chain off the sprocket, especially if you're trying to seperate the power head from the bar while the saw is stuck in a tree that has sat back. Also, doesn't the 357 use a different bar mount than the 372, can you mount a thinner Windsor Mini-Pro bar on a 372?

It sounds to me that you should probably narrow down what the saw is going to be used for. Naturally the bigger saw will overwhelm you with power but is that what your looking for? "Balance" do you mean between the saw and bar while cutting or power to weight balance? If I'm reading this all correctly ya got the small saw ya got the big saw , so the 357 sounds about right. sell the 288 or retire it.

I'm facing the same situation for a middle saw. I decided on the 357 now just saving for the purchase. I'm not going to consider the 372 not because its not a good saw but if it can run a 28 plus bar I won't have much sawing use for my big machine except for milling. Good luck shopping its half the fun. The Hoosier

Sharpen your chain the in-laws just pulled in!!
