Before i took the flywheel off the they were definitely to close together

for a 272xp it is .012 module gap. maybe, most of them in my manual for lots of older huskys show. .012

Backfiring could be from water in the fuel, bad plug, bad coil or wire, grounded out blue kill wire. But it’s usually timing or spark related
