Which filter do you already have wedge? The tall one from the factory works pretty well.

ive got the smaller one i believe, its about 2" tall. made of black plastic and fine mesh. i think theres another size that comes on it but im not sure. ive seen other 372's with a taller filter cover on em. which leads me to believe maybe there was more than one filter style that came on em

This could be an expensive switch, I think the plastic intake the air filter rests on is different between the two size filters, so to go to the larger air filter you would need to change a few things like plastic intake, air filter element, and plastic cover. You could check with your local dealer to see if he has a parts saw to sell you these parts. Used parts generally sell for half of what new prices are.
I just looked it up, heres what you need to go from small to large air filter.......husky 372xp

Cover, about 16.00
filter holder, about 6.00
air filter, about 22.00
knob, about 6.00
screw, about 1.50

These are list prices and will very................
The factory lists three differnet LARGE air filters, ranging from 20.00 to 45.00

Good luck with your project...............:D

any one have any opinons on wheather its worth it? a freind already told me its not gonna gain me much. but i have noticed that a fine wood powder is passing through the screen. are any of these larger filters paper?

Wedge, are you sure yours didn't come with the highback filter? Below is what my 372XPG looks like. The white mesh filter on top is the filter it came with, the filter below is the flocked filter which immediately replaced it. Just curious if nothing else.

Is the very fine wood dust that passes through screen type air cleaners really that harmfull.

Yes, if it impedes cooling flow of the gas/oil mix through the bearings or causes any buildup that would stick a ring. If it makes it into the combustion chamber it will very quickly become abrasive carbon.

that link that has the pics in this post is exactly what i need right down to the cover. i have the flat short filter (crap) any one know where i can track down the parts i need or is new my only option?

hey wedge i had the same problem with my 371,about 3 years ago, it was sucking in a fine dust in to the belly of that manifold. It cost me about $ 70. can. to make the switch.
The only draw back to the switch is that the flock filter colects alot ,i mean alot of dust.
cleaning of that filter is every day if not more.

play safe

by the sounds of things its cough up the $ or let the saw eat dust and that cant be good

Or maybe eliminate the fine dust problem. The only time I am making fine dust is when I'm milling or cutting with a dull chain. A sharp chain makes chips, no?:)

Just my thought.

hey,
you are right a sharp chain spits out chips, but evey since i flip over to the tall boy flock filter it gets cloged with a fine dust,

Your saying to your self, 'bubs' not to handy with a file but the wrong asumption.

I don't now if it is the ridges that cathes the dust at the back, or the fan can't blow the dust correctly in that tall boy configuration or what. but man alot of dust.

my bud has a 372 when i work for him (he has the plain low filter) and i sharpen his saws and vise/versa it does not collect dust.

i just priced the parts id need to switch over the 372 to large air filter. the figure the dealer gave me was the price of a new poulan, the fella must of thought i wanted to buy the whole store.

Wedge, just buy the low profile flocked filter. The one on my 2171 doesn't let the fine stuff through. Much cheaper.

yeah, i think its like $20. im amazed a factory filter like that would let stuff by like it does. oh whell. its the best saw ive ever had in my hands. its worth the $20 to protect it

I'm not as much pro-Stihl, anti-Elux as I might portray myself sometimes, and this isn't intended to come across that way either.  So much for the preface.

Has anyone besides me noticed how Elux-lovers loudly bash Stihl at just about every turn yet very little of the opposite occurs around here?  This thread would be prime for such!

"Stihl's filtration sucks in comparison" - in general, that's probably not too false a statement.  To be fair, it rather sounds to me in this particular case like either the winter air intake passage is open, thus [greatly] bypassing the "turbo" classifier or that the classifying mechanism itself is in need of a cleaning.  I'd have thought from the usual rhetoric that this problem should not arise.

"Stihl [stuff] is so much higher than Husky" - it doesn't sound like that's an exclusive situation here, does it?  To be repetitive, aside from mail-order / box-store sales (the latter of which really don't pertain to the "real" saws anyway) I've never seen Elux stuff being available any more (usually less) cheaply for comparable gear.

Don't jump all over me for this, please.  I know I can't be the only one thinking this stuff.  And besides, I tried to actually be helpful a little by suggesting a couple of things to look at in this case.

i looked through the whole tread and i didnt see one anti stihl comment. i personally love em. this husky is my first and i love it more than my others. no bashing here bud

Wedge, my point was that this thread would be prime pickings for a Stihl-underwear-wearer to lash back at the Elux-underwear-wearers, yet it did not occur.  Just look through some of the recent threads about Stihl saws and note what happens in the opposite direction.  That's all I meant.

Do you regularly maintain your "air injection" system as a whole or do you simply clean the filter element; and is your winter-warm-air passage flap to the cylinder compartment open or close when you find all the bug-dust?

Glen

my flap is in the winter positon now as its cold out my air injection setup is cleaner than the hood on a hemi roadrunner.
