It depends on where you're getting your Meteor pistons. All the Meteor 395 pistons I've bought have the "wingdings" on them, same as OEM. Skirt length has been the same as well.

This was from two months ago, the pistons where from northwoodsaw. Also every OEM 395 piston I've measured has been shorter than the OEM 394 pistons but not as much as the Meteor 395.

I've been getting the Meteor pistons from Bailey's and I think they're much older stock, because they're still coming in the blue/gray/white box instead of the green and white boxes.

Another run of pistons from Meteor I've noticed some differences with are the 064 pistons- some have straight skirts and some have the wingdings.

Oh, that's not good to have old product out on the market like that. People expect consistency. All the boxes I've got have been the green/white boxes.

Wingdings or not I would have liked a longer skirt 395 piston for the 2100 build I just did, then I could have take more out of the combustion chamber without getting the intake timing too high. Even with the shorter skirt it was still the better choice due to the ring pin locations. Oh well, she still turned out to be 190 psi and without a decomp that can be a bear to pull over.

Srcarr52, did you sell your 394? I was interested but the one I just got done building was way to cheap to pass up.

No I haven't. It seems that I missed the firewood season bubble. Now that we are close to Christmas I'm sure people are limiting their spending.

Ok, when you put a new style Meteor 395 piston in a 394, are you guys rebalancing or do the Pistons assemblies weigh the same? I'm fixing to tear into my 394xp and I'm hoping the new piston and rings is just plug and play.

it is plug and play

Well, I've been waiting to tear into the 394 because it was running good but it broke a cylinder bolt yesterday so I've got to tear it down whether I want to or not. What do you guys know about leaving out the base gasket? Some people recommend it but I'm curious if you have to cut a pop up on the piston to make it work? It seems counter productive to me to cut a pop up if you're trying to raise compression. What say y'all?

I went through the old girl today and she runs great. I just put in the new piston with a base gasket. I don't reckon I really need to hot rod this saw so I'll run it stock for a while and see how it does now that it's freshened up.

How do cylinder bolts break????? I've never seen that!!!

I'm not sure RiverRat but I figure it was either over torqued or vibration just got the best of it. I don't like bolts that are threaded all the way to the head because that creates a stress riser but I don't think that was the problem in this case. Oddly enough, the other three bolts were loose. I'll probably check the bolts every time I run it for a while to see if they come loose again.
On a different note, I noticed the notch in the case that lines up with the impulse port in the cylinder doesn't leave much mating surface for the gasket. I'll try leaving the gasket out if I ever have to tear it down again.
