hey everybody.

i am contemplation buying a 441

i really like the size of the 044 and i could even use 460. I've never seen a 441 and was wondering if any of you have any experience with it.

another question is what size bar. i know the bar size should be determined by what you are cutting but the trees i cut vary alot. i could be cutting 8 in cedars for 2 weeks and then cut 3ft live oaks for months on end. i saw that a 20 in bar is recommended for the 044 and 25in for the 441.

any help would be appreciated

The 441 (like the 440) can use a 28" bar with ease, and perform reasonably well with a 32 inch bar. Ignore Stihl's recommended bar sizes" - that has to do with kickback testing, not ability to perform.

The 441 is too new for any "objective" comments (there are 44 pages in the "prince" thread...). Bottom line - it's a nice improvement over the 440. Some find the 8 ounces of extra weight objectionable, but...

The 440 will be available until at least the end of the 1st Quarter 2007, so you have your choice to stay with the old or move to the new.

I like the 441 for a stock saw great power over a wide powerband.

if yo are looking at modding one ge the 440 they mod great, or just bite the bullet and get the 460!

welcome, here we go again. The 441 is very new and I have been running it for the last 2 weeks. It will soon become another of my favorite saws. Great power throughout and no vibration. Did I mention that their was no vibration. As for the added weight, you don't notice it once it is doing its job only when carrying the saw. Good luck!

Can't comment on the 441 but if your cutting 8 inch cedars for two weeks straight and then jumping to 3 feet oak for months on in you would be much better off with two saws. Having one saw to do it all is a tuffie. The big saw will do it but at the price of your own comfort. No point carrying around a big saw for small wood when you could be carrying around a small lightweight saw made just for small wood. Something to think about....

Ultra, I see you have a HT101. Great machine. Have you tried the new HT131.
Comes in at 1.9hp compared to the 1.3 HT 101. I was able to plunge cut with it just to see what it would do.

The HT101 is going to stay I really like it..I will try the HT131 but will stay with the 101

Yeah the 101 is a good unit  with plenty of cutting power and torque. I like being able to cut without powering it up and hitting the wood like other units. Not to mention names but it always comes back.

The increased weight of the 441 vs the 440 is a huge disappointment.

441 weights sligtly more than the 460, and it has about 10% less power output.

Troll, where did the weight figures come from? The 441 is a heavier saw than its predescessor but its not heavier than the 460.

Yes, I believe it is.

441 - 6.6 kg according to Stihl.

460 - 6.5 kg according to Stihl and DLG/KWF earlier, Stihl changed their mind to 6.6 this year for some reason....

For comparison, 440 - 6.1 kg according to Stihl and 6.2 according to DLG/KWF until this year, 6.3 according to Stihl this year.

Why Stihl changed the stated weights for the older saws this year is anybodys guess, but I do have a theory..... :angry2: :censored:

Troll: eat your wheaties! This was a nice thread... and now...

You were disappointed a year ago when you knew it was going to be heavier than a 440... We're talikng about the same weight as a small can of beer.

You don't know if the USA and Europeans models are identical in weight, if even if they are, very few actually care.

I own 12 Stihl saws and I would suggest avoiding the 441 for a couple of years.

I would avoid it until all of the Stihl models are the new heavier EPA saws and you are left with no other choice but to buy saws with lower power to weight ratios.

Also be wary of the guys here who are on the payroll at Stihl, like Lakeside and Thall.

Tree the best thing he could avoid would be you. Hows ya backside feel BTW, :) :) :)

bought another saw today. after looking over the specs of the new 441 and reading thd "prince" thread, I decided Id stick with the good ol' 440.

O and BTW. Dealer told me in October MS200t's are going up in price $50 , which is about a 10% price increase.

Ummm, that would be a 11.2 oz weight difference between the two using the current manufacturer's published specifications. Just shy of 3/4 lb. And that's the minimum. It could be more if you believe that Stihl 'fudged' it's specs on saw weight from last year's published specifications. (Math not being an apparent Stihl strong suit.)

Treeco,

Sorry, but I find that a very unfair statement. I prefer the input of experienced technicians who work day in/day out on equipment rather than many wannabees that fook around here.

Lake especially has shown more dedication to helping other people solve technical problems (and not only the Stihl fans)around here then any other person on AS lately. If you state allegations like that, please be specific.

Those few 441 ounces are beginning to trigger very strange behavior here lately, even from the most respected people around this place.
