Put a new tip in the 24" bar, much better.

Then did the next step-by-step check, removed the carb, other than an accumulation of dust around the outside of it and the mesh/screen that's part of a black plastic plate?, everything looked really nice.

So, took a breath and started removing the four little screws on the carb, and looked things over, appeared to be fine, put it back together before I forgot the orientation. Then went after the big single screw, and on the white square screen, there were sizable particles, blocking about 5% -10% of an opening. cleaned that up, put it all back together.

Went back to some willow, and did a crosscut, and a milling cut, went okay. The saw put out a deep toned, growly, burble for about 1/2 sec. , like a happy hiccup, then went back to it's usual mediocre tone.

Put on a new 32", 3/8-.063 b/c, that showed up today, and it pulled the 32" equally as well as the 24".

I realized that on a long length cut it runs out fine, and there is no way for me to leverage the saw to stall the chain. When I rock the tail back to shorten the cut length and dog in and tilt forward it is fairly easy to stall the chain, until the cut gets longer and the level bar just sinks through the round.

My expectations may have been too high, and my technique may need some tweaking.

THALL has vid of a 460, that may be a good timed cut comparison, for a general idea of what to expect.

Thanks for the help before, thought I'd give an update.

i have went back and read your willow post again and am more puzzled.

1. you said the saw is a year old, have you owned it that year or is the saw new to you?
2. if u have owned it then has the saw always ran like this? are u familiar w/ any other saw of like size? how much is it stronger than the 028?
3. a 460 absolutely rips w/ a 20-24" bar but it can be stalled w/ even a 16".
4. the one thing that gets my attention is your statement on "h" settings. 3/4-15K, 1.25/14.1K, 2.125/13k. first 2 appear normal but it should not not take another 1.25 turns for 13k. more like 1/8 to 1/4 turn. something is not right w/ the carb/fuel. usually if its a fuel issue the saw "surges" w/ full power then hesitates, back and forth.

if the saw has full power and the low performance is due to the bar/chain then there wil b plenty of heat and smoke very soon. i cant imagine enough drag to slow it down w/o plenty of both.

keep us updated

#1...Bought it brand new in fall of 2005, for my own use, have been the only user.

#2...The saw has run like this 99.99999% of the time, the other 0.000001% of the time it gives a burble, like a power hiccup, something hidden deep inside that wants to get out. I think Barney took over the soul of this saw.
.......The 360pro was purchased brand new with the 24" bar, for my use, used by me, then put someone else's fuel through it and toasted the p/c. Traded it in for the 460mag, transferred the same 24",20" bars over. My initial impression then was, bigger, heavier, somewhat better/faster than the 360.
.......The way the 028 cuts through the 12"+dia, is the way the 460 cuts through 20"+dia, gets there, eventually. The 460 was taking 20seconds to get through 26"dia willow with 24" bar and good chain before the carb screen cleaning and new bar sprocket, we'll see if it cuts better/faster with those two changes.

#4....No surging, responds to throttle appropriately.

Some perceived improvent has been gained from the carb screen cleaning, but I need to run the camera on a couple cuts to see, and time any differences from a different perspective.
Will fiddle with the H screw again as well.

Wondering if a muffler mod would help to wake up the 460? I know the 460, 510 and 5100 share the same muffler. Ergo...any muffler mod would be interchangeable. I was thinking about ordering a few of these and modd em' up as a 'hop-up' part for after initial break-in and end of the warranty period.

Any thoughts?

It seems the 460 is set apart from the 510 and 5100S by quite a bit. As it has a different piston AND cylinder. Shares the same carburetor, muffler, and almost everything else.

:ices_rofl: I believe the saw in question here is a Stihl MS460, not a Dolmar 460.....;)

Went out and cut in front of the camera, sat down and watched the clips, here's my findings.

Stihl, MS460mag, factory DP muffler, 24" bar, new tip, H screw is one turn out, tach clipped on for all cuts.
....Willow , 24"dia side to side, 26"dia top to bottom, oval cookie.
#1....8500-9800rpms in the cut, 30 seconds, 14,000 rpms out of the cut

....Silver Maple, 20" dia
#2....forgot to look at tach, 18 seconds,
#3....8800-9600rpms in the cut, 17 seconds,

Turned H screw out, 1/4 turn further out, total from stop is now 1-1/4 turns out.
#4....8600-10,200 in cut, 21 seconds. 14,200 out of cut.

In all these cuts, loading the saw down to 5,000rpms was pretty easy in both types of wood. It would seem that the carb screen cleaning really had no effect at all, just a perceived difference.

Starting to agree with the 'not enough fuel under load' camp from the last thread about this. Overall fuel usage is up from the stock muffler setup so it's going somewhere.

I'll drive an hour or so to put this in the hands of someone in the know, just PM me to make arrangements, I'll bring the wood too.
