Thanks for all of the replies. I may be asking for more help though. The 13,500 rpms that Stihl goes by, is that a high end number or a factory setting?:dizzy: I am new to the tuning thing with one of these new tachometers. I am not looking to go to a hotsaw convention or anything like that. I just want to get the most out of my new saw. I only got about 5-6 tanks of gas throgh it so far. I will be waiting a while to turn it up, I am just trying to get as much info as possible. Can you tell me a little more about the muffler mod? By the way I will be at a national electric code class for the rest of the day, that is why I didn't reply yesterday. Man those classes can be sooo boring! Also can anyone tell me what they use the full skip chains for? Do they cut faster? and does anyone have any experience with the "L" shaped cutter that Stihl offers.

Does anyone have or know where I can get the part number for the muffler from stihl? any guess on the dollar amount.. I ordered some of those new axes from stihl can't wait to get those bad boys.:blob2:

I came up with part number 1128-140-0801. Anyone know if that will work for the new 460 magnum? Any rutuning issues I should be aware of before I buy it?

Sorry guys I apologize I just went through the site that explains the properly tuned saw to me I think it was the 2nd or 3rd post in this discussion. Thanks for all the info. But I still need help with deciding on the muffler mod or to but the new muffler.:D

Crofter, I noticed in the information you gave me on that site you posted mentioned the 044, 066 and the 088. Mine is the 460 magnum, Is that close enough to set at 13,500? I don't want to screw anything up. All I want to do is get the most from the saw without risking any type of damage.

OK I only need advise on the muffler mod now. I called Stihl directly and the told me the numbers for the newer 460 magnum saws, they are as follows:

Idle RPM'S ----- 2500
High end RPM'S------ 10,500 is absolutley safe
13,500 is the max "NO MORE"

Just for your info the Stihl 290's are as follows

Idle RPM'S----- 2800

High end RPM'S---- 12,500 Is the max

Those numbers are according to Wayne at Stihl tech services.

So for those of you who want to know that is from the horses mouth.

Now for the muffler, Let's hear those comments good or bad.

:blob1:

I have the muffler you r talking about the part number for the whole muffler is 1128 140 0616.The part number for just the cover
is 1128 140 0801. If it were me iwould get the whole muffler it
has no baffles and has good sized ports.

Thanks for all of the information. I am not sure if I will be buying the muffler or not. I don't know if I want to go through all of the tuning issues. I will be turning the saw up though. I figured on satying around 13,000 rpm's that way I am still lower than what stihl reccomends. I will be listening to the saw and taking everyones advice. It's times like this where it is nice to have a forum to go to and ask for help! Thanks guys I will let you know how it works out.... Does anyone know what those mufflers sell for? My dealer has not got back to me yet.:blob2:

WOW! Sounds like either Wayne doesn`t know what he`s talking about or his advice was taken grossly out of context. Are you saying that Wayne suggested that you could have a no load speed of 10,500 rpm and it would be good for your saw? Stock 460Mags won`t pull 10.5k in the cut.

That is with no bar and no chain. That is how "Wayne" Said they test them in there test chambers at Stihl. I can post a number and an extension if you wish. Don't hold me personally acountable for these numbers, I am just going by what I was told.
