Sorry for not getting right back to you PB...been a real busy last couple of days. Yes, I agree a "Team Red" GTG would be a lot of fun, we'll have to discuss this further.

Hopefully I can find some time this weekend to work on these saws some more. I would have had a report Wed. night but when I went to set the camera up I found I had left the card at home in the computer.......

Great thread Dog...as others have said great looking shop!

Thanks!! The shop is nice but as usual even at 3500 sqft it's not big enough......what I really need to do is build a seperate, dedicated saw shop. Woodworking and mechanic work never go very well together in the same space.

Great work so far. I'm very interested to see how the porting works out. I've always thought about porting one of my 70E's or 49'ers because they aren't nearly as physically heavy as some people think. Power to weight ratio compared to a modern saw is where they suffer.

Thanks Marc..I've never even heard of anyone porting a 49SP..open port..... 49cc....not a real screamer. So that's why I changed this thread a bit from the beginning...since I had the parts....port one and build the other using basically the same new and used parts. I can't think of a better way to judge the difference .....if any. Porting a seventy might give some gains but the transfers are so limiting with no good way to enlarge them...however being small will certainly increase the velocity with intake and exhaust port work so I don't know......I didn't do this to the 70E in this thread mostly because it cost me dearly to acquire a NOS P&C and I didn't want to screw it up experimenting.

OK folks it's Sunday afternoon again and time for a progress report. I managed to get a couple hrs today to work on the 49 twins. I'll kinda walk you through the pics as usual trying to explain my madness along the way...LOL!!

152...Here's the 70E outfitted with the brand new Tsmura Total 20" X 0.058 X 3/8" with Oregon chisel chain. The bar and chain came yesterday. I ordered two...the other is for the 80 resto. I know this is not 49 stuff but I really like the 70E with the Total bar..LOL!!

153... OK this is another trick I always use. There is sure to be eye rolling and sighing but I develope methods that work for me and I am like electricty.....I prefer the shortest distance between two points with the least resistance.

In the pic is a foam coffee cup. This may well be a regonal thing but the brand is Philip Cup. I have added to the environmental woes of the planet many thousands of times with these cups. Note the tab on the cover of the cup......now note the two tabs on the bench that came frome two Philip Cup from my trash can. These tabs measure 0.012" always.....same as the air gap for most every small engine.....next pic....

154...Not such a good pic...next will show better.

155...Ok between the two pics you'll get my point. These coils are two leg meaning there are two places for the air gap to be set at 0.012" at the same time. Regular feeler gauges are rigid and magnetic and the setting must be made with the magnets aligned with the legs of the coil. This is a real PITA....so I came up with a trash can fix. I turn the flywheel until the magnets are up and then place the coil on the magnets. Picking up one leg at a time I insert a plastic tab under the each leg. The magnets pull the coil down and the plastic tabs conform to the curve of the coil legs and the coil. Tighten the mounting bolts, rotate the flywheel the tabs fall out and your all done. I like easy..LOL!!

156...I said earlier that I would not bore you with things like carb rebuilds and other thing you may either know or can search the site for. So this pic is two HS 21 carbs already soaked a couple days in lacquer thinner and rebuilt with new carb kits. All the rest of the 49 carb hardware is in this pic.

And now the rest of the story..

157... The 49 twins...the stocker on the left and my orignal but now ported 49. Both are sporting a NOS set of dawgs.

158..Same different angle.

159... Same again but showing all carb are stuff installed.

160...Closeup of carb installed.

161...Couldn't help it..another shot of the 70E with it's new Total Super Bar!!!

Robin, were you able to find those bars in the large (10mm) mount? Or have you swapped the studs out on your saws. It has been VERY hard for me to find a bar with the large mount for my 80. On another note, you will love those Tsumara bars. I have a 20in. on my 625, and it looks just as good used as it did new!

What size are you looking for? Oregon still carries them up to 28" I believe and you can get the total bars from a Jonsered dealer with the 10mm mount.

I bought an Oregon 27" from baileys, which worked on my saw. It was the D196 mount which I believe is a 9.5mm mount. I haven't been able to locate many of the D024 bars. The dealers in my area aren't the best. My favorite is a real small outfit, and his prices are quite high. Great shop, just not the best for parts I guess.

Yeah I got them from a guy in WI....a bit spendy but not to bad for a B&C combo $59.95 + $6,50 each for shipping....

Another Day...

Rainy afternoon here so I got to put some more time in on the twins. Made pretty good progress. Everything is together at this point but it is more or less a "dry fit"to make sure all the parts work well together. I am still waiting on some parts and all three saws need fuel lines and filters...a roll of tygon is on it's way and I have the filters. Still need a chain for the Sugi....may stop down to the local Stihl dealer and pick up a nice pricey loop of .325 tomorrow as it's right on the way to the job. Not sure what I'll do for a B&C for the stock 49SP. I have a real nice Husky B&C but it's 3/8" and I rather prefer .325 on these saws. Anyway on to the pics.

162...OK this is a shot of a stock 49SP clutch cover (dirty), the other cover is also a new stock replacement cover. Remember when I was installing the gas and oil caps and said that the 49 didn't come with chains on the caps but the 52s did? Again the 49 was lightned of any "extras". Note the little rubber bumper in the new cover and the stock one doesn't have it. This was an extra and the production 49s were not allowed this...cost to much...LOL!! Every 49 with a lot of hrs is missing the paint on the case where the clutch cover vibrated against it. The replacement covers came with this bumper as they would work for either the 49 or 51/52 series.

163...All the parts cleaned and layed out for both 49SPs.

164...My original 49SP...this is the closest I've seen it together in years.

165...Same saw other side.

I gave my 49 every performance advantage I had available (which was not a lot!!)..altered an alum exhaust gasket to fit the new port size and as you may have noticed a fairly open muffler...

167...Here's the stocker...it was always a nice clean case so it got all the "pretty" parts. This side shows a NOS recoil cover...still need to get a decal for it.

168...Other side shows the stock muffler and a NOS clutch cover.

170...This is the twins and their step brother, one of my favorite 49SPs. It has a 52 two ring piston and electronic ign module. The reason this saw is in here is that I was deliberating which muffler to use on my 49, the one I did or the one in this pic on this saw. The one on my saw was on this saw.

171...Here is all three saws in this project...a bit different than when we started LOL...

I am getting closer to the end but there is more to do yet. More will follow when parts arrive and time allows.

I picked up a loop of Stihl .325 RSC yesterday for the Sugi and also pulled an 18 in Husky bar with a fair Oregon LPX from another 49SP for the stocker. That way they will both be pulling the same amount of chain.... So now all three are outfitted with B&Cs. Getting down to the wire.......just waiting on a coil of fuel line.....waiting......
