Hello, I have 1000s of old presets, tie straps, cutters, drive links, rivets etc. I am hoping that some other guys will join in and get the dimensions for all the old chain parts stored here in one location. I have lots of them that I do not know the brand or anything that I'm sure some guys can use rather than it just laying around here. If this information is already posted can someone point me in the correct direction?

IMG_20170220_193848278.jpg I've been looking for 5/8 presets for my Oregon chain for awhile now.

Example 1 - preset

Center to center of rivets = .562
Bearing Flange = .218
Bearing Flange Thickness = .067
Rivet Hub = .149
Overall Length = .954
Overall Height = .368

Only identifying mark is a single dimple on outboard side of strap between rivets.

This is exactly the point, if we can get all the dimensions, etc in one central location we can hopefully all help each other. Just like you need 5/8 presets. That tells a very small portion of the story as not all 5/8 presets are the same. I have lots of 5/8 presets, but without the dimensions like shown above, I can not be certain I can help you.

Mike acres site has a lot of information on different chains as well.

Still not enough information to identify anything unless it's in a loop with the number on the drive link. I also have many more brands that aren't listed on his site. I'd like to have this be a "master" list that guys can go to, find a chain part they need and send a PM to the OP.

The 5/8 chain I have is Oregon 17L

Exactly my point. I have literally dozens of bins that look like the one above. I'm sure other guys do as well. Oregon 17L doesn't tell me if I can help you. I'd like for everyone to be able to help each other out here, but simply having the chain number isn't going to be enough information. Maybe in the end it will be as chain parts get identified.

@undee70ss - That is part of the challenge that this thread is trying to address. Not all 'half inch' chains, for example, are compatible with each other - they use different parts, even though their 'nominal' sizes are the same.

Exactly, my goal would be for guys that have chain parts to use the format like I did in the example above. Would be great at the end of this we could say "Example 1 = Preset for Brand "X" and Model #"Y" chain." That is my long term goal with this project. That can happen if guys can get as many measurements as they can from know brand and model # chain and posting the information here.

Perhaps you could list what measurements are needed to correctly identify a chain so folks with oddball chain know what 3-4+ measurements they need to take and post. Really interesting thread that if done by the OP's wishes could be a highly useful resource for collectors and enthusiasts. It will put certainty into vintage chain parts removing the hit & miss waste.

I thought I did this in post #4 above. Perhaps I'm not understanding your suggestion. Can you explain what I'm missing here? The goal of this post is to not only buy, sell, trade etc. It is also intended to be used as a reference guide and possibly show what parts can interchange across brands and model #s of chain.

I think that the information would be more accessible in some type of table / spread sheet. E.g.:

A spread sheet would let users search and sort the information if trying to find a close match for a chain or preset that is not listed.
You could add columns for overall length, height, thickness, etc., if you think that this is important.

That is a great idea, I actually thought about that earlier, but wasn't sure how to have the spreadsheet updatable and accessible for everyone. Then embedding to this thread. If someone can do that would be ideal...
