Hi all, I did a report up for this tree today to condemn it to be taken down as it is pretty much dead, question is, is there any value to the lumber? It is a codom with each trunk being about 32" DBH. Info is appreciated. if it worth a bundle, maybe Rbtree wants to have some fun cutting and sharing the $$ ?

The stem doesn't bother me too much from the pics. I'd leave it based on the visual, but is that all deadwood in the top? That would be my rationale.

Nick.. I agree, the codom isnt a major issue, its lived this long and hasnt fallen over but.. the leaves you see are about all it has, most of the wood is dead like lumber, my thoughts are construction pressures did it in over the last couple years.

Paul, there appears to be little or no value in that wood, at least to the regular log buyers. There will certainly be some decay, which is normally not a good thing. Dead, or dying maple can be spalted, so you might be able to interest a craftsman in some the wood.

If I wasn't so busy, I'd love to come up and help ya do the job. It looks to be reasonably straightforward.

sigh. thanks Rob, I was hoping you would say that it was worth a fortune! :) If I get a big takedown I will definately have to get you up.

A local guy makes salad bowls for a hi $$ eatery; buys maple from me at $50./ truckload uncut, he loads. If it's got good color, more.

Tree looks like it was topped, eh?

It seems like the topped bigleaf maples are more predisposed to burls/figured wood. Bummer that one doesn't have any. I removed a topped one recently that yielded a 15" X 14' straight stick full of figured wood. The 2 sawyers I called weren't willing to drive for 1 little stick. But a guy working down the street offered the homeowner $100 for it....we'll see. It hurts turning straight logs into firewood.

A large bigleaf maple i removed a while ago had an excellent red coloring in the center of the stem, the coloring extended maybe a third of the total diameter of the stem. The wood was completely sound throughout except for the bottom 6'. Could have made a few superb beams about 10"x10"x20.' But now it's firewood. :(

Would have this likely have been the same discoloration that Tom posted about a while ago in an Acer Negundo?
