My truck is in being repaired so I have been trying to make up some leaflet designs, but to be frank, im a better arborist than a signwriter.

Does anyone have any good designs I could get an idea from? I promise that from New Zealand I will not branch out and take any of your US customers using your well thought out ideas.......yet.:D

One think I have done in the past that gets good feedback is staple packeted tea bags with the leaflets. With a blurb "Have a cup of tea on my and imagine how your garden could look with the professional tree service of......."

Best advertising is a website. Second best is brochures purchased from ISA or NADF. Stamp your own info on em and hand them to those whose trees need care.:)

Both very good points.

I just got some info on doing it ISA thing with my New Zealand arborculture association magazine, I have looked into it in the past and it seems pretty worthwhile doing it in the USA. The thing is that the cost of it is pretty much double as I am paying US dollars with New Zealand currency. The ISA is hardly recognised here even by arborists, let alone clients. I will probably undertake it in the future but at present is not something I can foresee doing. Im currently studying up in my own time.

At present I have a mountain of bills due to being off for a month due to injury, so I am trying to do something short term (ie leaflets) to get some business going so I can pay for bills my insurance, yellow pages, truck repairs and heck if I have enough I might just pay myself one of these days.

What do you guys find to be most most effective advertising?

Website, by far. I guess that's worth repeating. Very cheap to do.
If ~$45. NZ is too much for 100 ISA brochures on Why Hire An Arborist and you have some time on your hands, volunteer to plant a tree or work on one at a local school and be sure it gets publicity, even if you have to write the article yourself. Best way to get your name and service out there.

Though I've never done this, I read other other peoples' cards when they're posted on corkboards at businesses. The first that comes to mind is the local sawshop or lawnmower shop. Favor toward the owner may return you the favor. Local grocery stores, mebbe. Doctor's office... (waiting room), local mechanic, local restaurants or shops, local anybody with whom you do business, as long as they have a corkboard . It's just a thought. I have no true experience in this area, except that I always look them over. -TM-
