In a rescue situation, forget all the BS, put your spurs on. Many places I have seen it written, spurs are only to be used for removals or emergencies. Must be a reason why this is said, any ISA types want to explain this?
clearence how you doing.. anyway spikes should be ready ta go for a rescue, the reason if you let your boy die up there cuz you were footlocking or throwbagging you would have some splaining to do, speed and safety as well, UA totally different as your aware of

Amen. no rope technique is as fast as a set of gaffs. If it comes down between my buddy's life or tree rights, I hate it for the tree.
dont hate nothing get the gaffs get him down

Although I am an optimist at heart and always solution oriented. I am also constantly imagining "things gone wrong." Generally I favor the following in preferential order... Of course every case is different.

-the belief in self rescue, (get yourself down)

-the belief in peer rescue, although our civil servants are great guys and have only good intentions at heart, they spend most of their active duty pulling obese people with coronary issues off toilets or prying apart the offspring of a toyota/ford rendezvous. Your best chance in a worst case scenario is your crew. I have seen veteran fireman hedge while tying a bowline and NOLS instructors begin to cry while the situation was far from dire.

-Lastly and hopefully, they might be able to pluck you out with a ladder.
you need them when ya get him down not to get him down anyway i wanna hear about the nols instructor you reduced to tears

I've been cut at 80 feet on the forearm by a one handed saw. I began rapelling down and my foreman noticed I wasnt gonna make it to the ground because I would run out of rope. He promptly tied another rope to my climbing rope and started lowering me down. 12 or 15 stitches is all but I nearly passed out when I hit the ground. Funny I wasnt about to pass out in the tree.. lol

Do you ever take off your spikes or are the grafted on "Wolverine Style"?:hmm3grin2orange:

 There a big tree co in our area with a bad rep as loppers and ive heard from a client that had used them before (but never again) that the guy actually got out of the truck with them already on when they pulled up out front!!!:jawdrop:

I can just picture this cowboy walkin up the driveway.:(

I have a small first aid kit on my belt as well. Working conversions on the line crew-65 poles a day- we kept our hooks on all day. Pull up to the pole, jump out, climb the pole, switch over pot, down the pole, go to next pole. :p

You guys are right..but???

You all are right, that there should be someone there to pull YOU down from a tree, or you are available to do an areial rescue for YOUR crew, and we should all watch OUR OWN backs.

Here's the situation though. There are alot of hacks, do it yourselfers, and wannabe tree trimmers, that have no common sense, and most have a delusion of their own immortality. When one of these people get in trouble the most commonly called number is 911. In our small area the volunteer fire department will be the first responders.

I have been recently discussing this with one of the local volunteers here, to help them at least get the basics of aerial rescue, as well as the gear they would need. You are all smart people, and gifted in the fact you can do what the normal population sees as courageous, (at least), and miraculous, (at best). But is it just for show, and money...or are you really a citizen of this earth that is worthy of the air he breathes?

How many of you would donate your time to help the vfd learn the basics of aerial rescue? Or do you feel that these people deserve not to be rescued, because of bad judgement, or your own self-righteous indignation that unqualified people are working in your territory?

What about it...do the unqualified deserve capitol punishment? YOU have the ability to help...will you? I will bet most of you who read this will feel indignant that someone even questioned your morals, but will never take up the challenge to actually effect change. The answer will probably be "its not my fault if a hack can't find someone to rescue them". I don't treasure hacks, nor do I treasure fools, but I would much rather save a fool, or help others to save them, than I would a self-righteous indignant jerk, who won't share the knowledge he has to help others. Get over YOURSELVES, here's news for you...the world existed before the ISA, and you. As a citizen of this world, you need to prioritize your values a little.

I'll get off my soapbox now, its uncomfortable here.

OMFD, another has mocked the allmighty and holy ISA, and the prima donnas that wear thier colors, awesome.

Clearance..I am not mocking the ISA, they could teach me a thing or a dozen. I am challenging anyone with the knowledge on how to rescue people to pass it on...including me, and you.

OOps, got off my soapbox, and went right back on it...sorry folks.

We have the same regs here, cept for the certificate bit, "a duplicate set of spurs, belt, flipline etc." along with another climber must be present. I was taught to climb up, snap the guy to your saddle and then use your rope and his rope to come down. Easier said than done, I'm sure.
Page 1, I said it, know how to do it, next.

And who read it,,,other tree guys who already KNOW how to rescue stranded climbers. Think outside the audience here. Man, I have seen your posts, and you are pretty level-headed on many things. What I am saying is we should either be volunteering our services to rescue others, or teaching those who do...how to. Most tree trimmers know the risks, and either how to avoid them, or how to prepare for disaster...but there are alot of them out there that don't. Think of the neighbor down the street on top of a ladder, he cant reach a limb, climbs up the tree a little ways, and gets in trouble.

Or the row guy doing a side job on his own, to make a little cash for his family, gets in trouble..no help, who is the homeowner going to call...it won't be the arboristsite.

How many times have you put your pole saw on branch facing at you? How many times do use your hand as machete whacking out dead branches? How often do you use your saw one handed? How many times have you said, " Wow, that's the first time that's happened.". Now think about all the guys with less experince than you. It's like the ad with the guy on the ladder with the string trimmer taking out a bees nest ( love that one ), seemed like a good idea at the time. Worst case scenerio.
