Air filter thickness

I replaced air filter for the first time on Stihl ms 170.

I bought oem kit: air filter, spark plug, fuel filter from Stihl dealer.

Now the new air filter is twice as thick as old one.

When i put on top plastic cover (shroud) it is hard to close. I have to press fairly hard on cover to be able to turn the locking lever catch.

I guess i should just ignore it and leave it as is ?

Any suggestions.


I washed old air filter, left it to dry, and stored it as a spare...

You sure you got the correct filter? Does the PN on the filter match the PN on the IPL for the saw?

Never looked on ipl pn for somerhing as simple as filter. Although i should have.

Turned out, thick filter was for 2mix model. And that one i bought as fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug kit.

Second filter i bought is sold separately without plastic bag and pn marking. That one is for my saw, but was quite different from original one.

All purchases i did at Stihl official dealer.

So i ended up puting old washed filter in, and saw works great.

Are you in Belgrade, the country, or the town in Maine?

I believe all Stihl air filters have the PN right on the filter...sometimes in really small font.

It is getting to the point we cannot verify correct parts without a serial number or at least the old part to verify. Running changes and different versions make it very difficult.

I will take picture side by side of all 3 filters, tomorrow.
