I replaced air filter for the first time on Stihl ms 170.

I bought oem kit: air filter, spark plug, fuel filter from Stihl dealer.

Now the new air filter is twice as thick as old one.

When i put top plastic cover (shroud) on, it is hard to close. I have to press fairly hard on cover to be able to turn the locking lever catch.

I guess i should just ignore it and leave it as is ?

Any suggestions.

I washed old air filter, left it to dry, and stored it as a spare...

Hmmm better make sure the filter is seated properly and or it's the proper filter.
I buy OEM filters for all my saws and never experienced that.
Stihl MS 250......new vs used, identical.
Have you tried the aftermarket filters for your 250 from either Amazon or eBay? They look the same to my eyes but eyes cannot determine filtering efficiency.

The MS170 and MS180 have a fabric filter, no frame. Any chance it is two filters stuck together?

I took this picture earlier. Does not show anything. Don't have the saw with me to take pictures that show huge thickness difference.

This new one is light gray on the opposite side. And is thicker and more firm material, so when top cover is placed, plastic in contact has hard time to dent the filter to make a seal.

I tried separating the filter between grey and white side, to check if they were two together, but it is one piece.

Shapes of both are roughly the same.

It is no big deal, i guess. I will buy another one (not as a part of the kit though) next time i stop by Stihl dealer. They are cheap.

Vibration of the saw may dent the filter more and may make a perfect fit. Will see.

Old filter is incredibly pliable. New one feels like firm cardboard.

If they both have same pressure drop, that is what counts.

I started saw with new one just to try it, and it worked.

Was the tune-up "kit" OEM or aftermarket? If OEM I would take the saw and filter back to the dealer and ask for a replacement.

These filters are non-woven polyester. Just toss them in the laundry when the wife/SO isn't looking. I wouldn't put them in the dryer.

OEM, bought it from a Stihl dealer.
That is the kit all dealers sell.

I did wash the old filter, just not in loundry.

I can't be bothered for a $ 3 value, to start emailing back and forth. Stihl would investigate it though. But just can't be bothered.

Filters could be equally good. Plate type filter sits between two plastic pieces, it may compress over time at sealing contour.

I just know what to look for when i buy next time.
