I just picked up an air spade the other day and finally was able to use it on a transplanting job yesterday. We got a "sunami" compressor from the local rental yard and for the morning it ran fine. By the afternoon I had overheated or stalled it once. After lunch it just ran like crap. What advise would you guys give for future compressor rentals? Should I insist on something like an IR??

I'm not familiar with the brands you mentioned, but assuming they are tow behind compressors, and make around 180 CFM, they should be fine.
We have also faced the frustration of rental equipment. Out of fuel, dead battery, low on oil, etc., etc..
Our best luck has been renting from a dealer. We have a local Sullair dealer that rents compressors, and because they know their equipment, have access to parts, and are trying to sell new compressors, we find the machines are always in great working order. They also offer them at a competitive price to get them in your hands, so when you go to buy one, they'll be first to come to mind.
I'm sure if you find a dealer, you'll have much better luck.
