That is sad.

We almost had the same thing on a job back around 1989. My employee, Andrew, was up in a tall pine we were deadwooding. We were using a lift to place climbers in multiple pines, may a dozen or so. I was on the bucket truck controls from the top of the bucket truck. Andrew had been in a pine about ten minutes when I saw his climbing rope fall out of the tree he was in. I yelled up to Drew to tell him to lanyard in, if he wasn't.

He wasn't lanyarded in.

He had cut the tail of his climbing line completely off about three feet below his friction hitch. Had he even descended 1.5 feet he would have been in free fall from 45 to 50ft. up.

I'll never forget it. I was pretty sure I'd see him free fall as I was looking and talking to him.

Maybe not the best time to tell such a story but this stuff happens so easily in our trade.

My son is a climber as well as a small aircraft pilot, I scan the news regularly when I see a small plane crash in the area I hold my breath until I get confirmation that he's ok! He's very good at his craft but as a parent, you can't help but worry!
