No, I am not a greenpeace activist, I'm just curious.

After seeing the pictures of the massive California Redwood trees in Art Martin's thread, I can't help but feel intrigued by the logging industry and curious about "what it's like" to fell and handle such huge trees.

I did some searching on the webternet to find a few pictures of the same size trees coming down in the Amazon rainforest today, which is pretty wild.

Have any of you been involved with logging in these areas? Have you ever been tempted to go down as a foreman or even feller for a temporary period just to experience it?

I know there are a load of environmental controversies surrounding the harvesting of this area and I suppose my conscience would never let me partake in the harvesting of this pristine area but man... can you imagine what it would be like to take down one of these giants if you had the chance?!?!

Curious...

I would like to feel the ground rumble when it hit:chainsawguy:

Try the westcoast of B.C., lots of big trees, like 200' tall x 8'-12' d.b.h.. The biggest I have fell is like 3' d.b.h. 120'+. I have been working a long way from guys falling big stuff, and you can feel the ground shake.

Strangly enough the tropical rainforest doesn't grow the really big trees.

Most tropical trees only live 60-100 years and then get taken out by termites or some sort of jungle fungus.
Live fast and die young :rockn:

The really big trees are in the US Pacific NW or in Southern Australia / NZ where you get the long lived temperate rain forest trees and 1,000+ year old giants.

The REALLY big trees are the Redwoods etc, some of the Aussie Eucalypts and NZ Kauri. If you ever get to see one of them fall ... now thats special.

Also dont believe everything the greenies tell you about the rainforest. If you clear cut an area, give it 2 years and it's hard to tell where you have been. 20 years it's ready to harvest again. Cutting the trees isn't the problem, not letting them grow again is.

Cheers

Ian

A bunch of years ago a timber company that I worked for in Alabama bought 70,000 acres of timber in Costa Rica. I worked there for a little while but when the bannana harvest was over they found out that they could hire locals for something like 30 cents per day. So no matter how many trees they busted or how many were hurt or killed I could not compete.
They had some large trees but nothing like I have seen in California.
