OK guys, I've been reading for months and have finally decided to stop lurking, join and post..
I'm going to be in the market for a chainsaw very soon - I'm tired of borrowing my fathers Stihl 250.
I recently became the owner of 20 acres of land, of which a good 12 is wooded. I am currently building a house on the land and will soon be cleaning the area around the build sight of trees we do not want - mostly cedars and scrub trees, nothing larger than say 18" trunks. I don't burn firewood and will only be using the chainsaw to clean up and as preventative maintanence on the land.
I was all set on a MS251 and have been reading about the Dolmar 421 and the Echo 400S. I've also been looking a little larger - Echo 590, Stihl 271, etc.. With my limited us, I'm thinking a larger saw might not be so bad to put up with for short durations.
As far as dealer support, while I'd love to have a good local dealer - I don't mind internet support and I'm capable of doing my own my engine work, so I'm flexible here.
For all practical purposes, my chainsaw work will be fairly "heavy" in the next couple months and then trickle to a "when something occurs" type situation. So, I don't necessarily need a V8 powered tree felling bohemeth but I also don't want a 13cc mini-saw either.
I guess my main concern is getting a saw that has plenty of power for my tasks and doesn't weigh a ton. I'm not a small fella but neither am I a crossfitting chainsaw juggler who laughs at the opportnity to hold a 15lb chainsaw for 25 hours a day.
I'd guess I fit somewhere between "home owner and farm use."
I don't have a budget - persay. I want to spend my money wisely, but I'm not limited to $526.18 max.. I'd prefer to stay around $400-450, but I'm flexible.
I'm open to more than just the saws I mentioned.
Anyone want to throw their .02 in on this and see if I can gather enough to buy a saw?
