Any old timers remember white gas and 30 weight oil?

My prediction is for oil base 2 strokes with electronic unit fuel injectors and fan scavenging. I think outboards are getting the injection system down nearly small enough to be used on a saw.

Wasn't white gas what ya added to keep gas lines from freezin up in the cold of winter? Although I remember 25 cent gas, I'm just not sure about the white gas freeze thing. And ya, them old "Clintons" were notorius for smoke, but they didn't inhale!

A friend of mine told me that his dad would mix gas and motor oil to use for deisel when they ran out out of deisel.

Is white gas the same as sweet gas? I ask because I found a station in town that has a tank that says racing fuel, I guess it's for all the low riders and street racers. The octane is 100 something. Some of my saw mix, (the gas, Stabil, and Racing 2-T) spilt in the back of my truck, and it had a sweet, chemical smell to it. It didn't even smell like gas. I'm old enough I should know all this, but I always figured white gas was just unleaded.

I hope that day never comes. I how could a 4 stroke saw ever work? I have heard the 4 stroke weedwackers are not the greatest.

That would be the homeowners grade units, the Stihl 110 models, and the like in 4mix setups are reliable as can be, and pretty good, if you keep everything adjusted right. Try the BR600, its 4mix, and everyone I know that has em, loves em.

Lawn Masters you are right, i was talking about 4 stroke weed wackers from Lowes. As far as I know the 2 strokes from lowes are not any better either. I did check out the 4 mix stuff from Stihl....looks impressive. I have a 10 year old Stihl weed wacker...got it used and with a little TLC runs like new. Quality products.

I was just looking in my stihl 090 manual and it said the mix ratio for sae 30 is 1:25 and 1:40 for two cycle oil. Why do you suppose they gave the option? Was it because the two cycle was harder to get back then?

In the mid fifties we ran our outboards on 20:1 white gas and 30 wt. non detergent oil. You would have to hone and ring em every five years on casual weekend use. They were also murder to start.

White gas is still made at least at the refining level. It is just a process cut taken from the distillation tower. Some of is made from the gas vapors collected from the top of the crude distillation tower, then they are sent thru some exchangers and made back into a liquid form hence Naptha. Naptha as it is used for gasoline feedstock. Some refinerys sell it for paint thinner....Bob Marathon Petroleum

Lumber jack I think they gave you the option for the 1:25 ratio if you had to use anything but "Stihl" oil like 30 wt or something but if you had the actual stihl oil it would be acceptable to run that at 40:1. That is my understanding of it from the techs.
