I think I'm just going to ignore all the advice I've gotten from local treeheads and just order the 10 free live oaks package with membership from Arbor day (q. virginiana). I'll plant all 10 along the street and see how they do. People say they are problematic this far north, but the main problem I see referred to is low acorn production, which is not a problem for me. It rarely gets below 15 degrees on the coldest nights and there is hardly ever a week in a row where the temp doesn't get up into the 40's or 50's in the afternoon, even 60's or 70's is common in January. week long weather where the temp never gets above freezing is almost unheard of. we did have a cold spell about 15 years ago where it got down to negative 8 one day, but that's rare, most years the low is never even below 10.
