Any thoughts on this felling job

Just looked at the pics again and that tree can be pulled easily with one rope. It is pretty balanced and has a good central lead. If I was doing it I'd hook up there with the 5/8" and do the rest as I said. Good luck nonetheless.

Just the half inch is what I have in rope so I suppose I will use cable and chain...I need to get some 5.8 rope what do you recommend?

The rope will work fine, nice and easy, not like you are pulling up the Titanic.

Samson Stable Braid or New England. We have two Samson 150' and one New England 200' with eyes on each end. The Samson is a softer rope, excellent quality, little higher price. New England is slicker and stiffer, still works well and is a little cheaper.

If you are worried about it, just double up the 1/2" lines, if you do it right it won't take much.

Call me if you need any help.

Thanks for the advice. I will price it at 450 on Monday and see what happens......

That sounds like a pretty good price for this area. If you think you're in over your head, give me a call. I like to drop the big ones, and my 3120 hasn't been out for any exercise recently.

I expect that tree will take about 1/2 hour, even with all the rigging. Do they want the trunk chopped up after it's down, or are you just getting paid to miss the house?

Just did one down in Wooster,Ohio. She had been standing dead almost 2 years and was still pushing water. I threw my 1/2 Samson Stablebraid around her waist right where the crown starts to divide and tied both ends to the tow rings on the front of my F-350, evened the rope up and put some tension on her. Hinge cut, back cut, boom. Oh yeah, a whole mess of dead branches to pick up over a gravel parking lot. I really wanted to just pile it up and torch it! Looking at your pics that tree does not look bad at all to fell but I would put a line in or around her just to be safe. Maybe even a bore cut but not if it is your first. The overall balance of the crown looks good for felling too. Working man or retired fella I would charge about 375.00 for my skill and expertise and liability to lay her down. Don't rush the job, shoot the bull while you are setting up, and instill a sense of confidence in your ability to do it as well as commending him for his good judgement in not trying to do the felling himself.

Got the job and got it done today!!

That was fun...I bid 450 then 50 more to take the bottom 12 feet. He seemed really happy to be getting it done. He thanked me several times and said he'd be glad to be used as a reference. I have some pics and video if i can figure out how to get it on here. Thanks again for all the good advice.

If you put the rope around many leaders, do not use a running bowline. Or any other kind of choker.

I did not understand this pearl clearance. Explain further for the newb, dense and inexperienced  .

He is saying don't choke a bunch of leaders together with one rope. When you are pulling the rope will be trying to slip, choking the leaders together, if this is done with a knot you will have major friction and heat develop possibly causing rope failure, also a lead could fail and cause instant slack in the system.

Got it! Thanks for the explanation. I have not done this and have avoided it because it is easier to attach to one leader rather than multiples. Now I know more reasons to not do it.

Couldn't rep ya, consider it verbal rep

Thanks, I am just glowing, if you could see me.

Under the recipients name there is a little white piece of coliflower, a tree maybe, click on it, say approve of disapprove, write some BS if you want, and send it.

Just a tip here, if you tie a biner or shackle on the end of the rope and clip it back to the rope to create a choker, you can slip with less heat or chance of rope failure than you would have going "rope on rope" with a running bowline. Regardless you dont want to choke a bunch of leads together that you are pulling on.
