I guess that they still use it sometimes, but I'm sure you're right about the small amounts. Anything is harmful if you get too much of it.

Excellent reference ! Apparently they do still use formaldehyde.

The article states that formaldehyde is extremely toxic, carcinogenic, etc, etc. It is certainly toxic in "tissue preservation" concentrations, but it has no long term effect, except where it may have reacted with our DNA or damaged our cells from exposure to a higher concentration. It is nothing more than a highly reactive organic chemical, which our bodies are equipped to process in biologic-originated concentrations. Man-made concentrations, as you might guess, have a different effect altogether.

My! What a departure from the original intent of this thread !

Pdqdl,

I'm still shaking my head over your workers mishap. :jawdrop:

That's a pain.

Hopefully nothing hurt but pride.

Well... Nobody was hurt, but my wallet is very unhappy.

The crane truck is still crippled with a bent axle/wheel/brake hub, and the chipper box is severely bent.

And my customer of 5 or more years may cancel our contract. The jury is still out on that one.

That was great! (great but gross) and I'm glad I'm not an embalmer, and who ever was warped enough to imagine you could smoke that? That was the most interestin thing I've read all day. I hope they don't firm me up too much when I die!

Thanks!

I'm very sorry to hear of your misfortune Pdqdl, and I'm impressed by your honesty.

I'm confident you've learned from this mishap and will be a better and stronger company as a result, after the dust settles in the next few years.

You need experienced hands and eyes on each of your crews when serious work is performed.

I hope 09 is a good, safe and profitable year for yu!

I guess we learn something new every day, whether we plan to or not!

R.i.p.

Never damaged a tombstone yet. But I am offering a special this month only. Cremtation is now about $800. Prepay $500 today and I'll run u through the woodchipper. I also offer a granite stone with the intitials R.I.P. (rest in pieces)...

Thanks! It was the biological stuff that used to worry me when I was a kid anyway. I'm sure embalming fluid is a chemical recipe, but back in the day I used to hold my breath and all kinds of stuff not breath in the dust!

The dust realy screws up my sinuses now. If I do a large take-down where I am on the trunk making big cuts and the dust is a fog around my head, I pay for days. I would wear a mask if i could , I have tried but it fogs my saftey glasses up so bad I cant see. I dont think your phobia of dust is bad. I also got the same thing when running non-remote control stumpgrinders, standing in a fog of dust for hours. My sinuses are screwed for good now. I always liked working in graveyards as they are peaceful , never broke anything in one but it could be very costly depending on what got broken.

Actually I still worry about the dead, diseased stuff when you put it through the chipper, and clouds of dust go everywhere. Those fungal spores cannot be good for you. I would say 50% of work is dead removal, but can you imagine wearing mask while climbing and chipping. I wear glasses too so I know wear you're coming from. I'm considering laser surgery.

When I finished the tree yesterday, I tried to evaluate how much wood had NOT been cut on the original attempts to pull the tree over. There was a strip of wood only 4" from the bark that had not been cut. Most of the back cut was only 12" to 18" deep, which means that there was NO WAY that tree was coming over yet.

I think i would have to fire who ever it was that made the backcut...

never hit a tombstone. but i saved one with a jameson pole one day. climber was supposed to be roping off everything, we were in a cemetery(duh). apparently he didnt think this one needed to be roped. ive used those jamesons to protect windows and all sorts of other stuff. really came in handy that day.
