I need a small truck, like a 1/4 ton, preferably a Nissan or toyota, with a manual tranny and in decent shape. my budget is $500. it MUST not need much beyond oil change, or spark plugs. My sentra is about to give up the ghost, so I need a truck to carry my tools in.

Too bad yer so far away. i was going to sell my 1985 toyota pickup soon. But looking for about $1000 for it. straight axle, 4x4, tool box, has 230,000 miles on it. Most dependable thing I've ever owned. Has typical WI rust though.

Anyone have something? I might be able to swing a few hundred bucks more, IF the truck is worth it to me.

Could you get me some pictures? this might be worth it to me, if its the type of truck I seek.

I'll get some better photos this week. However, it may not be what your looking for if it would be mostly highway miles, especially with the price of gas going up. It would, however, be in it's element in the woods or back roads. You can see a photo of it in the "Dream Cars" thread, along with a picture of my Z-28. I also have a chance to put a large fabbed metal box on it as the bed is pretty much done for.

How is it on gas mileage? also, what size engine does it have? that looks pretty much like what I need. a metal box would do VERY well for me. Hang onto it, I'll see what I can afford to pay this week.

Gas mileage was approx 20-23 mpg when i first bought it (I am the 2nd owner). Now it has started to fall back into the teens. I have written down almost every fill up since I have owned it so i always track my fuel mileage, it tells me when something is wrong with the truck that you wouldn't otherwise notice. I would say fuel mileage now is about 16-18. 16 when in 4x4 on the highway in winter trudging through the snow and wind, 18 for a road trip anywhere down the highway or interstate. My worst was towing my boat down to storage last fall, a 17' fiberglass center counsel into a 20 mph head wind. I got about 13 mpg. It's a fuel injected 4 banger, (22 REC). However, i haven't towed with the truck more than 3 or 4 times since I've owned it.

Yikes! Delivered would be probably at least an arm, maybe a leg too. Thanks to ridiculous fuel prices, I would guess it would cost more than the truck itself to get it delivered!

Maybe I can ship it part by part? Might be cheaper that way.

I just got a quote on a shipment from Texas. It was $1.39/loaded mile.

Thanks Bill,
On that note, I'm gonna look for something a little closer to home.

The hunt is over, I've found a truck locally for $500, its a 1984 Ford Ranger. 4 cyl with a 4 spd manual tranny. looks REALLY nice, and drives great too. I just gotta learn to let the clutch out gently. its only got 40K miles on it, but looks like almost new, with the exception of a few rust spots on it. couldnt have timed it better either, as my sentra's clutch gave up the ghost today.

Cool! Congrats, OSA.

Sounds like you might have lucked out. I had a Ranger 4 banger, & everthing was pretty much accessable as far as working on it. Baby it as much as possible, & make it last awhile ;) .

When you get tired of the lack of power out of the 2.3 let me know. I raced the 2.3 in my 4cyl open wheel. I still have a Holley 500cfm carb and a D port head for it. I sold the engine to a "Tuff Truck" racer. He raced it all over the midwest. I was watching him on TV one night at a race in Des Moines IA. I was quite proud of watching an egine I built run on national TV (it was on TNN before they went bad).

I prefer the 4 cylinder engine. if I dont have too much power, I cant get the vehicle going too fast, which means, I stay out of trouble that much longer.

Congrats Old Saw. I bought my old Yota with 150K on the clock and now we're turning 230K this weekend. Got the truck for a great price and haven't had to stick much into to keep it going. Glad you found something close to home for the right price.
