Are Stihl crank cases matched?

I don't know if you can buy just one from stihl. They may want to sell both.
Most agree it's ok to swap halves if you need to.

These guys seem to agree and I have talked to others who have had good luck as well. What model are you working on?

bwalker,

Yes, when buying them from your Stihl dealer, they come as a set.

Ben i have never had any trouble with using different halfs from different saws, so you should be able to find a used one somewhere

from between the lines did you put a tree over it or did someone run over it

Stihl's service repair manual says to replace them as a unit. From what I understand each pair is line bored as a set. I've mixed and matched in the past without any problems. The only risk you're taking is pre-mature main bearing failure. If it's for your own use it's no problem. If you're trying to save a customer some bucks, I'd let them know to CYA.

Not to suggest that alignment is as critical as say, on a laser eye-shaper (whatever that instrument is called), but if the output shaft isn't perpendicular to the bar mount the rim/chain will work with side loads that will shorten life-spans accordingly. That before any bearing problems, I'm sure. That and possibly (though slightly) premature seal failures...

cases

Used to do it alot with 041 farm boss. Guys liked them in a bucket, but broke cases when they dropped them. Some will swap, some won't. Depends on the relationship of the crank bore to the alignment pins. I could leave the pins out on a few, but these were low speed saws, might not be a good idea on a high speed saw.
I am also thinking the machining process has improved a lot since then, so maybe most of the cases will swap now.
