Made 5k yesterday with no crane (widowmaker, big oak), 2k today (average day), got my check for the week and had a note:

"Thanks for all your hard work this year, so and so says go file unemployment on monday, we'll call you back if there are any big storms or we need you before then, see you in the spring."

Seriously? They can't even tell me there's no work left to my face? When I asked to be told a week or so ahead of time when there's not going to be anymore work, was told that was no problem and I might not get laid off, why the #### couldn't someone keep their word?

I'm a little upset.

they all do it, they don't want disgruntle employees working out a 2 weeks notice of being laid off, I worked for one of the biggest there is and they told us one day at 2:30 (wouldn't even let us get our full day in) to go home and file cause they didn't have any work then 3 days later they canceled all my insurance and I got a $1200.00 doctor bill in mail.....

Is it common for the company to lay people off this time of the year? Have you been laid off in past years? It does suck but if it's happened in the past, you had think it was coming possibly. I feel for ya but thats how things are right now. They really have some balls essentially saying they'll put you back on when they need you during during a big storm, kida like beingon call but without the oncall pay. Why not get with a couple of other guys that got laid off and make the storm money on your own? Maybe your own side biz that may take off by spring and then you don't need them.

Just thinking .....

Man..that blows. I would be upset for sure. Best I can say to u TrillPhil is to not do anything without thinkn it clear through. Dont do anything rash. I know of some people right now who would LOVE to collect unemployment and know (assume) they have a job in the spring . hang in there n good luck .

Well obviously being in this business I know that there is less work in the winter than the summer, but like I said before I asked to be told slightly in advance when it would happen. I was then told that I might not be laid off.

While I would like to burn something down or mysteriously have a couple 88s, I don't live like that... today. I don't think I would want to work for them in the spring, I think I'll try to get on with one of the other tree services. Maybe we'll get some bad storms this winter and I'll make enough money to buy some decent equipment, not just the basics like I have now.

If you are that productive for them, they will want you back. When they call you back for more work, you will have an excellent opportunity to negotiate a signing bonus to compensate you for the rude treatment this fall.

I have never laid anybody off without them seeing it coming. It's obvious that you will want people to come back next spring, so why play games with good employees? If they aren't worth treating properly, then just fire them for what you don't like about them, instead of laying them off rudely.

Like I stated it before I saw it coming... But asked to have a little notice. I'm not even that upset about the lack of notice, which I feel is very disrespectful, because I was told that would be no problem, and it would have been just as easy to say "Man, I can't be certain when the work is going to run out". The lack of even a face to face discussion after we had a conversation about it, when I brought it up, about a month ago, is what I think is bull####.

A ####ing note, what the #### is this 5th grade? Are you inviting me to a wedding and I'm a distant relative? Am I in the hospital and you cannot come visit?

The one time I didn't come into work there was a message on his cell phone before it was even turned on, two hours before show up time, when I was severely ill.

I really need to get over it, it's been a few days now. Almost there. Filed for unemployment today, there's a one week period you cannot be paid for or something...

Been looking for a job, there's a post on here to be an estimate guy in Indianapolis...

You've got a right attitude, you need to be recognized for doing the right thing.
If you take retribution of any kind then you become what they are. Guess I've said that to myself more times than I care to remember.
