I recently hit paydirt with removing a stand of red oak for firewood and find myself sharpening chains every night and even a few times "on the job." I've been free-hand round filing for about a year - most the times I'm satisfied with the results, sometimes its apparent that I could have done better.
Anyway, all of this filing has me wondering what the jury decided on the ATOP system. The previous threads seem to indicate that it produces a sharp cutter, but a few questions remain:
- does it hold its edge, or will I find myself having to swap out chains more frequently than when I round file?
- does it take much more time to file once the jig is set up than it would clamping down a saw and free hand filing?
- is it practical to use on site?
Where is a good source for information (other than here), and where can I get a jig? If anyone is still using it, I'd appreciate your insight. thx.
