if i lived near ya, i'd come and dig some out for you....lol

thanks for the pics....now i gotta see if anyone sells them locally.

I guess I was thinking of a different species - Japanese knotweed. Up this way, we just call it bamboo. The stems are hollow and have the feel when dead of the stalk of a cattail flower when dead. Not woody, which is why I wondered to myself why someone would consider using it as fuel. Thanks for educating me.

Rewgardless, this is bad stuff - in the same category as oriental bittersweet or tree of heaven in terms of its tenacity and ability to proliferate.

wow....thanks!!!

now....would that stuff grow up here in rochester, ny?

dont see why not, it grows up here in maine. got the stuff all around our house.
i just dont see any sense in trying to cut it up because its just going to multiply again and it wont last long enough in the wood stove to make a huge difference. but if you have alot of it you need gone, mine as well toss it in the fireplace.

i want to use it as a natural border. i'd like to grow it along a 300 foot stretch and keep it about 10 feet wide. that stuff, from what i've read, is just the ticket.

I know a Little about bamboo. I am not an arborist or Landscaper. I Know of two types of bamboo. running and clumping. I don't think people have a lot of trouble with clumping it starts in the center and gets thicker. Running bamboo is a big problem it will tear up driveways fences and is hard to get rid of. It can be contained in a pot. I don't know how deep the roots run it they don't grow too deep they could be contained with some kind of a barrier. I have giant timber bamboo in my yard it is clumping about 20' tall now the stalks are about 1 1/2" in diameter at this time I hope it grows up to 45' tall. I think bamboo could make a good barrier. But if you are growing bamboo on a property line talk with your neighbor, see if they are OK with it, or grow it back further on your property David
