This has probably been covered, but was does Stihl make a different mount for the 088? Why did they not include the 066 so that the bars were interchangable between the two? It just seems strange to me to have one saw with a different mount than the rest. Im sure there was probably a good reason for it, like to make people pay more for bars. Is the mount on the 088 made stronger to handle longer bars? That was my guess, but of course I know nothing.

088 mount

Rob,
Steve here... Yes the 088 mount is stronger in the fact the studs are a larger diameter and they are spaced out farther apart, I assume to displace the weight of the longer bars...That said, the 090 is basically the same mount but the slot is even longer on some bars to accomidate the even wider spacing of the studs on the 090. In theory... You could shim the 088 bar for the small studs on the 066, but the oil holes aren't even close.
Steve

Oh... and the tail of the 088/090 bar is alot taller to accept larger sprockets
I think my 090 had a 8 tooth 404

Yes, I would assume the tail pattern is larger, but i was referring to new saws. Sorry about not specifying. It just seems like they would have more then just one of the saws in production now having the same mount.

What about the 3120 & the smaller XP’s 372, 385…
I think I remember them being all the same?

two types of stihl mounts

088 and 090 use a 14 mm slot
Most others NOT ALL use a 12.1 mm slot.

You can use a 1mm spring over the bar bolt mount to make it snug.

You can call OREGON and they will send you a bar mount / catalog for free.

HUSKY MOUNTS

This is not a canine answer nor taxidermy.
Although you may sink your teeth into it.
I think the mounts are the same on a HUSKY until you get to the very small saw sizes.

Don,

Husky mounts are not the same until you get to the very small saws. As I posted earlier Huskys from 61 through 3120Xp take the same mount. The old Oregon mount is D005 (9.5mm slot) The new Oregon mount is D009 (9.0mm slot) The old small saws 34, 35, and 37 take an open slot bar #AO64. The rest of the mid-range saws should accept the A095/K095/Z095 mount (8.2mm slot). If my memory is correct the difference is not limited to the slot size. the oil holes and chain adjuster holes are different. As for the Stihl saws I do not recall and other paterns than the small (A074) 009-025. mid (D025) 024-066 and large (#E031) 07, 08, 050, 051, 070, 075,076,084,088, and 090. I may have missed one so someone correct me if I am wrong.

Bill,

That was the whole point of why I started this thread. Husqvarna uses the same mount for most of its larger saws in production. Although the 088 uses the same mount as all those other saws, they can not be purchased new anymore. So why continue to make a different bar mount for only one saw in your current production line? I would think they would either change the 088 mount to conform to a few of the larger saws, like the 066/046/044 and have different mounts for the smaller saws. I imagine that would cost too much money.

Quite possibly the larger mount on the 088 has something to do with structural integrity of the studs and casing?? When running 40"+ bars they may feel that they need the extra strength. Just a thought.

Weatherby,

If Stihl would change the mount of the 088 to conform to the smaller saws it would cost them more money plus possibly weaken the mount on the 088. If they change mounts the tooling for the 088 would have to be changed costing them money. Even though the 88 is the only current production saw using the large mount Stihl would still have to produce large mount bars to sell to those running all the 51-88 saws. It simply would not be cost effective.
