There was a guy on this site in the early days named Walt Galer. He worked for Windsor and advocated the use of HyTran fluid as a bar and chain lube. He said it actually worked better than tacky bar lube.
Never had a single failure with Walmart SuperTech and not from lack of trying. It uses the same base oil type as Stihl btw.

I had an old craftsman saw and I ran what ever I had tranny fluid, motor oil, clean used I got that saw so hot the throttle trigger melted. Then I bought a new saw and have used husqvarna bar oil ever since in every saw I now own good stuff bars and chains wear good too.

Waste oil stinks, it don't wash out'a cloths, stains your hands, and is flat-azz messy... I use it for dust control on the drive.
Canola oil is more expensive than bar 'n' chain oil, turns gummy over time, and can go rancid... I use it for cookin' fish and french fries, then use it for dust control on the drive.
Walmart is maybe where I'd buy a new toaster or coffee pot... but certainly nothin' OPE or automotive related.
I use bar 'n' chain oil as a bar 'n' chain oil... at 4-6 bucks per gallon from the farm 'n' fleet type stores it seems like the best thing for that purpose.

I think when it comes down to it, anything will work. I buy oils from WalMart. I work there, so with discount basically tax free. The supertech bar and chain oil works good enough for me. I can't see it being any different than another store brand oil. WM also sells poulan oil for a little more. Waste oil works in a pinch.. Oils oil. Its a chain that goes round and round

Using oils that are similar in viscosty to ATF for a while now. TSC , Menards brand would get cut with ATF (1:1) or similar oil. The oil holes in the bars, sprocket tips hardly ever plug up and the gunk under the clutch covers is also reduced. Washes off clothing easier as well. Have not had any negative issues other than a slight increase in consumption and the hard tip bars can get a bit smokey sometimes, not as bad as Canola or straight hydro fluid but more so than straight TSC oil. To much tack was a pita, especially in the cheapy saws like 018s and the diaphragm pump saws.

Standard procedure on any new, current model saw. Turn oiler up to full blast. Begin work. Finish fuel tank. Damn, still nearly a half a tank of oil left. Huh. Find thinner oil, repeat. Or just thin the oil a wee with kerosene or something.

Ridiculous.

At least that's my experience.

My few chinese saws oil like crazy. Gotta watch it or you'll run out...oh, and so do my old name-branders..

I've only had problems with Stihl saws in this regard.
