I suspect Poulan has changed formulation. I just opened a new jug and it pours like water - very thin. I had been using Poulan as that was what was available here in town. Too bad that I bought 2 gal at once. I will be switching to something else the next time I buy.

Ive run the cheap sh??ing bar oil and ive run sae. 30 weight motor oil. Is there a diffrence? hell yes. But what i have experienced is the cheaper bar oil seems to be ok for the smaller bars 12-16" the longer bars it doesnt provide the lubrication out to the end and back along the bottom side. If your not cutting all day every day i think the cheaper stuff would surfice- but again if your not using that much why not just spend the extra couple of bucks for the good suff ? I normally run the husky brand but have been running the poulan brand tried a bottle of it for the heck of it 12"-28" bars no galling or burning to the chain or bar like the low rent stuff did to me-here in iowa i can pick the "poulan" gallon jugs for less then 4 dollars or you can take two steps down the isle and pick it up in a white jug that says husqvarna on it for a dollar 20 cents more humm wonder if there the same ???? diffrent bottle i would say so. All bars longer then the 28" and up i run the echo brand its red and is by far the stickyiest bar oil i have ever personally seen or used. Just my two cents worth.:greenchainsaw:

Crumm, I did the same thing with the oil cans at our shop. Had several gallons saved up for the saws.

When I got the MS361 and after reading many posts on this site, I thought, what the heck, try real bar oil. Up to then, I would have to retension my chains repeatedly when cutting. I kept thinking the bar was working loose and I kept tightening the nuts tighter and tighter. Since using "real bar oil", I have to retension the chain only after extended cutting - like a hour or so - on any of my saws. I will use only bar oil from now on.

I've got about 8 cases of it (I don't wanna run out).
Way better than the stuff I was using from hardware store.

I also tried the motion lotion from baileys....it seems to work very well.

I just bought this year a Stihl MS650 and the oiler is cranked as far open as it will go and there doesn't appear to be an excess of oil on the chain. I think with the new saws that have to comply with the new EPA standards we are going to have to use the Stihl or Husky bar oil as recommended. There doesn't seem to be any room for error.
Prior to the new EPA regs. you can most likely get away with off brand bar oils.
The way the auto oilers are on the new saws I don't think I am going to take the chance over a few bucks.
