Although we usually use the dealer supplied bar oil, I've met a pro timber harvester locally who uses Castrol Tection T 15W-40 - super high performance 15W-40 mineral oil for heavy duty off highway vehicles/precessors/forwarders/Volvo road trucks but also uses this oil for bar lube in their chainsaws, simply because they have it in abundance by the IBC (1000 litres). Is this a common practice and something we can all do?

The commercial product used in Stihl bar oil is Paratac, but I have no idea where to buy it small quanities, and it's quite expensive.

Thank you Mr. Lakeside53. The tackifiers in proper bar oil, would you be aware of it's availability as an oil additive perhaps?

MR TOM buy bar oil. Lakeside is 100% right as always. The fellow using that other oil is wasting it like crazy because it gets thrown off the bar. The real bar oil is sticky thanks to the tack in it and remains on the chain and not flung off while the chain is spinning. Buy real bar oil and be happy MR TOM, perferrably Stihl bar oil, its good stuff ya hear me, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr., LOL

When I used to get my motor oil for free, I added STP. It was then indistiguishable from B&C oil; to me anyway.
Of course, now that I pay for it, I buy the right stuff; there's no price advantage (or any other advantage that I can see) to mixing my own.

That is very good information Mr. Lakeside53. I'm going to check out the European availability of Paratac as I've a large supply of Castrol Tection T 15W-40 which I use in European road haulage operations.

For the moment though, I'm going to stick with dealer supplied product.. you hear that Mr. THALL10326... oh no, are you ganging up on me again :buttkick:

What's the availability of STP motor honey Mr. 04ultra?

Just messing with ya Tom, you have to know that by now don't cha, hehe

Thanks Mr. 04ultra.... very good.

As for you Mr. THALL10326, Of course I'm getting accustomed to you and I know you are a total :jester: but, in fairness, you know your Stihl stuff.... thankfully!!!! :)

I've used a bottle of STP to a gallon of "off brand" oil of undetermined age and origin, and it worked well. Had a couple of bottles of STP from an old car long ago, and thought the two would solve the problem nicely. They worked well. Got rid of all of it by putting it to use.

Of late, I'm using bar oil from Walmart. It is cheaper than any motor oil. While it not as thick as premium bar oil, it seems to have a tackifier added, and lubew well enough, even in summer.

That's a good idea, to add some STP or other thick lube, for the summer

I'll wade through a lot of pretty dull posts to get to a gem like this one. Where else can a bunch of meatheads get together, have some some fun, and get a few things accomplished? I wish my work were this way.

i just use the motor oil that comes outta my car when i change the oil . it works plus you dont have to pay almost 3 bucks for a quart of bar+ chain oil

:greenchainsaw:
