When I went into the saw dealer this morning to get some BS parts I was able to get a price from them for a 55 gal drum of bar and chain oil. $671 for the drum, and then I'd have to get one of those little pump things which is about $30 give or take... I keep my oil in a 1 gal gas can because it pours easier, and is tougher than the 1 gal bar oil jugs.

What do you guys do? Do you get it by the gal, or do you get the big drums of it?

Lets see TSC oil is $9.00/gal x 55 gal= $495.00. Not much of a deal by the barrel is it.

I worked in camps where motor oil was brought in in 'lube cubes' (~200 gal in a cube style container that could be forklifted). The big problem was spillage and the amount lost at the bottom of the container below the pickup.

How would one of those pumps work with the highly viscous bar oil?

I buy by the gal cheapest I have found. does anyone know how to thin the oil for winter I do not want to buy the more expensive thinner oil. can I add gas or diesel or something else?

The Owners Manual of one older saw that I have says between from 0-30 degrees to cut B&C lube with 5% diesel fuel or kerosene and below 0 degrees to cut it with 10%.

Oh yah, that's a rediculous price for a barrel of bar oil. At $6 a gallon you could buy a pallet of gallons from local stores for half that price.

Where is Gary when you need him??? :givebeer:

Guy says that he can get a barrel of bar oil for $671. That is 55 gallons of bar oil. See? Now, you can get bar oil for about $6 a gallon at several places around here. 55 x $6 = $330. And it is in gallon jugs, easy to tote around. No need for a pump. So you go to the store, and buy a pallet with 55 gallon jugs of bar oil, and pay less than half the price of bar oil in the drum.

See??? Simple math, $330 is less than half the price of $671. Also if I owned a bar, I would drink waaaaaay too much beer. :greenchainsaw:

You got me "wind" I meant the" farm guy", the bar reference was good. It cost about $4.50 to less than $5.00 a gal. where I go. Anyway, cheaper than bars and chains!

Ah... I see... you live in sunny San Diego, where it freezes once or twice maybe every odd year. I lived there for 7 years myself. Up here in the land of cold winters, standard bar oil gets real thick at or below freezing temperature. So they sell winter bar oil which is thinner than standard bar oil. Some folks put diesel oil (or is it gas?) into it to thin it down. I put the bar oil into the mud room to keep it warm overnight if I am going to cut on a cold day, so the oil flows better.

he must have been talking about a 55 gallon barrel of crude oil...........lol

that's high, $12.20 a gallon that way plus the pump............no thanks

c'mon treeslayer.....why spill the secret? On the other note, I got to work in the sleet and snow till mid-night last night and it will get to 60 deg. today. Crazy Texas weather!

You say it was dry, but it also had oil in it? :monkey: :greenchainsaw:

Should not matter really. Most bar oil is 30 wt oil with additives to make it stickey and dyes so you can see it. I think that the Poulon oil that I have has blue color to it. I also use Durex which has a red color to it. Mix and match... never a problem for me. You can always rinse it out with a little diesel fuel, or white gas.

Of course maybe they put in Castrol 2T premix oil into the bar oil tank? That is also blue goo... :dizzy:

I haven't gone to TSC for oil in quite some time, but the last I recall a 1 gal bottle was about $7 or $8??? However this year buying the STIHL oil it's been something like $13.50 or so per gal??? I think that's what the 55 gal drum is... STIHL oil. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not. The biggest plus I saw to it was never having to worry about if I had enough oil laying around.
