Beech Trees not growing leaves.

I'm in the Poconos, PA. Every beech in the area is not growing enough leaves this year.
I know we haven't had a lot of rain but this is only happening to the beech trees and its happening to every single one I've looked at within 20 miles. Looks more like a disease specific to this species (fagus grandifolia).
Anybody know whats up with this?
